My biggest concern was ( like someone else said ) why are they looking for a dj now and not a few months ago ? I usually ask for 30 days notice so I can make sure I have the songs that they need . When I told her my fee it was like "well ,um I have to talk to ,um my sister " so my guess is that she was looking for a $50 dj

If that's the last contact you had with her, you are not booked and off the hook. Enjoy your weekend.

Patrick you are very successful in how you have presented yourself much more than 90% of the folks here but I cant agree on what you say I have to trump you on this. I dont care how much investigation you do on FB or via emails you cant gain knowledge equal or close to what a face to face allows. I am sorry I have to adamantly disagree. You are 100% more successful with your formula than these folks on these forums but I have to say if you did face to face like I do you would increase potential.

I totally agree - Patrick, you are successful. I was just adding my $0.02.

I agree - that's the first thought that went through my head - what happened to their last dj?

The most likely answer (being Mr. Obvious here)........some DJ bailed on her last minute. The really pathetic part is, she booked a cheap guy, got burned, and now she's looking for a replacement cheap guy. What an idiot.

Sorry guys by booking and never meeting the clients you will never get a sense of who they are and what their personalities are like. I've said this several times before and I'll say it again. Human beings do the majority of their communication via body language, not through typing into an online planner. There are mountains of academic research that back my stance up. You simply cannot gather anything but superficial details about a couple unless you meet them.

I feel the same way i like to meet the clients face to face i feel its more of a personal touch

I agree with a few others here. If she didn't call you back by the end of the next day, she found someone else.

98% of the time, if they won't meet in person with me beforehand, I don't waste anytime with them. (exception to long distant clients)

Exactly, if someone doesn't want to meet face-to-face (if they're local) then their wedding and reception must not be that important to them and if that's the case then I'll take a weekend doing stuff around the house.

Well they called back last night ,apparently their phone had some problems. the show is on for Sat should be an easy one they only had two songs they wanted everything else they said to go with the flow

As an FYI, Gigbuilder now offers the ability for electronically singned deposits. I have used that a few times now, as it is new, and it is great. I can literaly either have the system send it to them or email them a link to sign the electronic contract and it is back to me and filed in Gigbuilder faster than I can say Thank You. I also take their payment and event info through the system as well.

I've figured out how to send a link to but how do you get gigbuilder to email it autimatedly?

Call me old-fashioned however If I can't get face to face (within reason) I won't do the reception. Now I only had 12 weddings this summer.........next year 6 are booked already. Life is Good! I'm doing quite well for my area, which has been hit hard with this recession. 4 Xmas parties booked this season, every year Gail and I get a bit more........... :)

Best,

Paul

If that was your biggest concern, it's easily solved. ASK THEM. 30 days to get music? 99.99% of music that I'd need is available in minutes.

While I certainly would prefer to get together with the client to go over everything, we have everything set up so in situations like this, they can sign and pay in minutes, and they can use our online planner. We did one a few weeks ago. They called on a Monday for the upcoming Saturday, their DJ had bailed, they booked it over the phone, paid in full with a cc, and signed the agreement electronically. They had their planner filled out the next day and said we did an incredible job. The DJ went over the planner with them on Thursday via phone.

The Bride mentioned to our DJ when she thanked him and tipped him and told him what a great job he did that she felt more comfortable about the event talking with me for 15 minutes and then him for 15 minutes on the phone than she ever did all of the times she met with the guy she booked months ago. I was very precise in exactly what would need to happen on her end and our end and very confidently told her that we would get it done for her.....and we did.

Again, not our ideal way of doing things, but if everything has to be ideal for us to do business, then we are losing business, because all kinds of situations come up that aren't ideal.

Scott I ask for 30 days to make sure they are serious and it gives me plenty of time to find songs for them if I don't have them . Djing is only a sideline for me if I do 6 weddings a year it's a lot I have fun doing it and I've been told I'm very good at it
the wedding went smooth no troubles at all and best of all payment was CASH !!

That mighta been a little bit o' luck on your side. I'd be almost afraid to book a last minute wedding (although I also could) - what happened to the other DJ (like they didn't know they needed a DJ?)

The scary part is the bridezilla's and the must have songs that are a day / few days out - and you don't have them. I'm prepared to roll right now if I had to, equipment wise, contract wise and other wise. It's all the other crap that worries me.
The other crap as you put it doesn't scare me. It's last minute and i'll do my best for a client but when it's last minute i don't lose my mind.

If the issue of them needing a DJ last minute is because the other DJ cancelled, i say they should have made a better choice in a DJ.

John,
Great to hear all went well. That's what's most important. Still a little lost om the 30 days. To me, someone is serious when they pay and sign the agreement. However, it does make sense that it would take someone that does 6 events per year a
little longer to get music.

While I do ask people that are booking late why, it does not affect my answer. I don't blame people because a dj backed out on them. It helps to know so I can help calm their fears that it won't happen with us.

Last minute bookings happen with us all the time (at least 1-2 per month). Using the online management system allows me to email a contract, they can digitally sign it and I can get a deposit all within 10 minutes. Even the bookings that take place 8-12 months in advance get a follow up call from the DJ the week of the wedding and go over details via telephone. Absolutely no need to do that in person. She probably found somebody who could do it "without the in person appointment and made it "happen".
