I tried using Wordpress one time, and was so lost in 2 minutes, I deleted it off my computer....wwwaaayyyyy to complicated for me
If u ever want to give it another shot I'd be glad to help.... Personally I hate the templates from godaddy... They are too generic and as you've already discovered they can't really be customized much.

And last year, I did a little "internal study" from our past clients (200 emails went out and 187 were responded to by the clients) asking about the email thing....because I heard that all the time on this board and others. Every single one of them said they did not even notice it was a gmail email address....and to quote one of the emails returned:

"that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.....do you DJs really think clients are that concerned with where your email is from."

It concerns me. The reason it concerns me, is because I see the word "cheap" in my head, when it comes to a business entity using one of the canned freebie emails. So when I see them, I think "What else are they cheap on?"

Do they buy the cheapest speakers? Do they get their music from some torrent site? Etc..

Perception is the key here.

Since you use GoDaddy, even their lowest price hosting gives you 100 email addys, and you can access them anywhere -- just setup the Pop3 to that email account on your devices. It's very simple to do, and to me, it lends more credence to a business. YMMV...

Tho I have had a web site based email for 10+ years I do believe its pure DJ ego and plotting a bigger place in the world of business than most clients will ever care about. Truthfully if we werent so into the business ourselves we might just see it like Patricks Clients responded pretty much unanimously. There are benefits outside a domain email address as well.

Nah, I don't agree -- it has nothing to do with ego. Probably half of the clients you might deal with, are very well versed in computer lingo these days (probably more so than most of the DJs). The people coming into wedding age these days, know what gmail, hotmail, etc. are -- they've probably used them themselves.

I'll give you a good example:

I have most of those services blocked -- in other words, my email software considers them spam. Lots of times they have ads, or text from the service added at the bottom of the message, that won't make it through my rules/spam filters I have in place. So I may never see a message from a customer who uses those type of accounts.

So, I get calls, and the folks says I sent you 3 emails in the last week and got no response. Sorry, but it was automatically deleted, and I never saw them.

I have tons of rules in place to weed out spam, because I get so many emails. But if it comes in from say microsoft.com, I'll take a look at it, since it's a valid domain email address that I do business with.

Whatever Rick so your basically clamping avenues which might assist in more business for you since you claim them as spam. Thats going to benefit for sure eh? Atleast in Patricks area and surveys I have taken in areas I have been. East and West the clients have no idea in fact the domain email might be more likely to get caught in spam filters as it isnt the norm.

I sort of agree with Jon. For a business system to block traffic from what many consider their primary email system (gmail, hotmail) means many unhappy customers. Most people don't own domains and have to choose either their providers email (ATT, Comcast, etc.) or a provider like Google or Yahoo. Those at least will still be there when they decide to change out the cable for U-verse or something, so many use those as their primary account.

Not good business in my mind.

Wait, I didn't send you your JTV decoder ring yet -- how could you sort of agree...? :sqlaugh:

It is the year 2012 last I checked. If you are running a meaningful business, you will have an internet domain. It is a complete tax write off (thereby saving you money), and gives customers a degree of confidence that you are not a fly by night operation. It also gives them confidence, that you at least know how to operate a computer with some degree of competence. Anybody that can't setup a Pop3 account, shouldn't be trusted using a computer to DJ.

I guess some can actually plug their computer into a power outlet, and hit the Sync button in VDJ -- but that's not who I would hire. I check out the people I hire, to make sure they are a viable business, and know what they're doing.

It's all about perception and branding IMHO.

I was talking about the potential clients and customers .... you said you were blocking gmail and yahoo .. I said it wasn't good business. I agree with you to a point that I would prefer to see a non gmail address (even if the clients don't care). It makes other business partners more assured IMO.

WordPress I pretty easy and can quickly be installed on most hosting services like godaddy for example... What I did was kept my existing site live and installed WordPress to its own directory... Then worked on its content until I had what I wanted and the moved the main files to the .com directory and from there bilge away

I tried as well, but kept getting stumped on making it look like a standard site, not like each page is a blog. And a template - want something classy, yet contemporary (bride centered but friendly (non offensive to a groom).
