There are two issues here...
1- continuing the gig after losing power
2- having functional computer gear after losing power
Where as we may not be able to power a whole system with a UPS, my main concern would be the affect of losing power, on my hard drive.
I had an issue last year where my files were corrupted by not properly ejecting my HD during a gig.
(because some moron unplugged my AC)
Although I love the thought of being able to continue the gig, after the venue owner TRIED to cut me off!

As I said back in post 8/10, at a minimum, your computer (and devices connected to it - external hard disk, midi, etc) really should be powered by an UPS. You can get a quality UPS that will perform this for under 100 bucks. I'm running on a 825VA that I got for 90 bucks .. but you could power a laptop / hard disk with something much smaller. How much run time do you need / want and how much are you powering is what it comes down to.

How is a UPS going to keep a Tri Amped System going? Remember when all power goes, so does the party, especially if it is indoors. I don't know the laws where you are but in Houston a Venue will be very reckless to try and keep a Party going indoors if the power went. It becomes a Fire and Safety hazard therefore everyone needs to exit the premises. if the DJ encouraged anyone to stay and they got injured, guess who will be to blame? If DJs want to be Heroes so bad they need to join the Military and fight in the Middle East.

Those are local ordinances -- just because it works that way in your town, does not mean it works that way everywhere in the US.

He is possibly referring to a safe system shut down .. and not meaning to keep the party going. A small 300/400w UPS will not power much of a sound system.
I also agree with this. If you need to, learn the local law.

It does not have to be just a Local Law to make sense now does it? Who in their right mind would want to continue a party in the dark where someone may have a mishap?

Let's say you had 30 people at your house for a party, and the power goes down -- do you usher them all outside...?
Those people would be MY Guests in MY Residence and MY responsibility at a PRIVATE Event. At a Public Venue, where I am nothing more than a Vendor entertaining someone else's Guests it would be very foolish of me to assume responsibility for an environment that does not belong to me and of which I have no control.Please don't call me Sir -- I work for a living.

Let me ask you this, when you have a fully charged battery in a Laptop and you are running software on that Laptop, what would you expect that laptop to do if you disconnect the AC?
I don't have to stress test anything. If something beyond my control occurs to stop a party, i don't have to play Super Hero to keep it going. I just might get to go home early!
This one venue i played at they would close the bar 5 minutes before the end of the night and started turning the lights on and off to let people know get out

Hey, you asked the original question about having the plug pulled. If you haven't stress tested your system, that's your own fault if something breaks.
My power goes out here frequently, so I know what to do. As far as my laptops -- they'll run for 3 hours or so without an issue.
BTW, as an FYI, you should unplug your lappy every so often, and let the battery run down to about 60% or so -- you'll get much longer battery life.
