don't know if they insure out-of-state
but I'd be glad to give you the name of my guy here in PA.

PM me if you wanna give him a try

Mike,

The only insurance I have experience with is through RV Nuccio and Assoc. I carry the policy through them with the ADJA. I am not a card carrying member of the ADJA, but they have an "insurance only" membership that gets you their group rate with RVNA.

ADJA annual memb is (was at the time) $99. Liability with RVNA was about $175.

No minimum revenue/receipts, etc. No requirements at ALL really.

This may be because their policy isn't the best, I don't know. I admit I didint run it up against a host of other choices before signing up with it, but it serves the purpose, and even never having to call on it or use it, the number of gigs I get per-annum just with the certificate of coverage alone over guys who dont have it makes the yearly outlay worth it.

They won't insure me. I hang things above people's heads. When you click yes on that survey question it won't let you go any further.

I gotcha. Well it goes without saying that there is coverage out there for what you are doing specifically, but it may as well be the case that it is cost-prohibitive for a business of your/our type and size.

Are you strictly lighting and visual effects design, or do you dj as well?

After a few agonizing weeks of Q&A directly with coverage providers within and from outside our DJ industry, the newer policy provided by NAME was the better choice for my operation (solo-op, one system, 80 - 100 events a year, no clubs nor karaoke).

It wasn't the least expensive option nor the most expensive, it just did what was best for my operation.

One of the highlighted huge difference was the rider in the NAME coverage that automatically co-insures every facility. All one needs to do is to carry a copy of the policy in your notebook or planner folder. Should one be challenged (or astutely wish to make a marketing "Hey, look at me and what I have that benefits you, Mister/Madam Banquet Hall owner" then point and show them details without being asked, go for it) simply whoop out the policy, show them the coverage dates, have them read the rider, and that's that. Badda Bing Badda Boom.

Other coverages reviewed allow for a few free co-insured certificates which you must provide the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the locations and wait for delivery. After those few freebies, you will have to pay for subsequent ones.

Good luck in your decisions.

Mike to add to what Steve listed,

There are too many companies that provide small business umberella liability policies to list.
Just a few are!
Wellsfargo
Nationwide
E-insurance (which is who I moved to and saved myself almost $200 per year)
Tech Insurance
State Farm
Geico

While I can't speak in terms of all the insurance companies listed, I can tell you that in the state of Indiana, State Farm DOES NOT Insure mobile DJ's as we are TOO HIGH RISK.(We fall into the same category as bands!) I called several State Farm agents and got the same answer. So IF you have State Farm Liability Insurance, I'd like to know how you got it, and if you got it, IS it really going to cover you???

Also on the topic of liability insurance, I understand that if you do interactive games, then the usually named sources of DJ Liability Insurance won't cover you, that these policies only cover the DJ who plays music and things incidental to making that happen. Anyone have any insight into this.

If this is so, where do you get your insurance that covers an interactive DJ?

Thanks guys. I finally got coverage ($2mil for $1500 a year) from The Heartford. They and State Farm were the only companies who would cover me, and State Farm wanted $1900 a year. So I am going with them. It seems I am too much of a hybrid. I can't get anything from entertainment companies because of my rigging, and I don't do enough volume for traditional construction coverage (Nationwide, etc).

I heard today that Digi Games was releasing a new interactive game. From what I understand of it the contestants wear helmets. These helmets have sensors on them. Each player gets a plastic bat. You have to hit your opponent over the head with the bat in order to activate the sensor.

I wonder what insurance company is going to cover that one.:sqwink:

I found it. It will be revealed in Vegas and the game is called "Clobber".

I've got it. They are unveiling this game in Vegas. We get a big ring together and have a tag team match:

In this corner Peter, Mark, and Randy

And in this corner Ron and ?????

To hell with the wiffle bats, I'm bringing in a Louisville Slugger.:sqwink:

Ooops. Sorry.:sqembarrassed:

Doug,
I know this is no easy answer but the only ones who can answer that are either the insurance companies or someone who's already been sued. I don't see either of them here. The rest is just opinion or a best guess.
