80%? 75%? WHAT?

You still give up a date and hours that could be filled up with someone who wants to pay 100% of your rate. A 5-10% discount is OK.. but 20%? Are you bringing one speaker VS 2? Are you only driving 5 miles?

Don't discount too quickly.. the brides that say they only need good music turn out to be the ones that dont realize how much coordination receptions take.
Your missing the whole point. All this stuff is worked out in the first and only consultation meeting. We both agree on what they want and what they will get. Plain and simple. If I think for a moment that these functions would turn into a full scale wedding I'd never accept them.

As for discounts mentioned, this would be true if all one does is weddings. Most DJ's do all kinds of functions. So, to book a regular party would be about half of a full wedding rate. You either book the first come first serve for the date or you hold out for the high paying wedding. It's called taking a chance. Since I don't expect to book a wedding on June 24, 2009, I'll settle for a couple who are just having a party. It's not a discount, it's not a cut rate, it's what I charge for basic show up and play functions. I'd rather know I'm getting something right now then nothing at all because I held out for the higher priced wedding that never happened.

I understand your point Ron.... but let's face it... brides dont know how much work is required to pull off a wedding. theyre not educated and its not their fault since this may be their first wedding. once they see how much work is required, they may ask more from their DJ... what do you do then?

Just make sure it's spelled out in the contract....

"DJ Company to provide music only."

That phrase right there would cover you butt... anything over and above that is the resposibility of the person that contracted ya... if they change later and want more then and only then do you draw up an adendum and of course proper compensation before it is agreed upon.

With all due respect you are exaggerating the conversation from what I've been talking about. Every case is different I understand, but what you've suggested isn't anything close to what I've described.

And should it be the case as you've described then that's the fault of the individual DJ themselves. If the DJ hadn't provided enough explanation, education, or insight as to what needed to be done or what will be done then there is no one else to blame. If a bride tells me they just want music at their wedding and it's a casual affair, just a party. Now if this wedding is being held at a 5 star hotel or typical wedding venue then I'd be real cautious. If on the other hand a bride tells me just as I've stated above, and their wedding is being held at an Elks lodge, VFW hall or a small restaurant function room, I think the circumstances would be quite different. I'd be more apt to believe all they want is a party.

Since I'm being requested to wear casual attire, perform no formalities, provide no planning, and receive no assistance from the venue, I'm pretty confident this will only be a party.

I understand what your saying but in the end it's the sole responsibility of the DJ. And as long as DJ's command their high wedding price for a simple party just because this person used the word wedding, I'll continue to have more business. I provide what people want, need, and pay for. What others do is none of my business.

CAREFUL RON.....'

Don't say the word "WEDDING" or I might have to charge ya! :sqlaugh:

Someone once here posted a thread about a "birthday party" they did... it was really a wedding, but the B&G claimed it was not.....

If memory serves, that was Tom (Goodnight). That's why he has a clause in his contract to specify the type of engagement. I took his advice and added it to ours. :)

Shoot -- Tom's got more clauses in his contract, than they have at the North Pole :sqeek:

Then again, he's going out of business... ;)

But ya didn't hear that from me...
