Rick don't cotten to using a reg'ler ladder (or latter for those lacking spell check). He, apparently, prefers other methods to get high.

Anyway, I was skeptical about why there was no video of him coming back down, so I went a hunting -- seems this first showed up last summer, and the machine was specially built for the climb.

Since I'm not an expert in the field, I looked to the experts in hydraulics, as to whether the climb would work in reverse.

None of them can figure any feasible way, that the climb would work in reverse...


If you can do it both ways, I'd love to watch... :sqlaugh: :rofl: :sqerr: :sqeek:

Admitting to not being as knowledgeable as Thunder or Rick, in this matter and this matter only, I wonder if there are any additional balance or weight transfer issues that would prevent a reverse routine?

Seems like it was more an exercise in balance going up, different coming down?

Explain your answer for full credit. Answers that make light of the term "going down" will result in punitive scoring.

P.S. JTV, mega chuckles on the explanation why Rick can't fathom the reverse methodology.
 
Let's see if I understand this...

From the ground he reaches up 2, lifts the bottom 1, and then move the arm 1 higher (to 3) and the bottom to 2, then the arm to 4, then the bottom to 3, etc.

Coming down would be the reverse. Lower the 'body' 1 and then bring down the crane arm by 1. He would 'start' at the 'ending point' for his upward movement and 'end' at the starting point with a reach of 2 'units'. Basically the exact reverse of him coming down.

If they can reach it going up, the physics of the known universe don't suddenly change to prevent them from coming down....

As for hydraulics, if it can lift it 'up' then it can lift it 'down' since the ability to move isn't tied to a 'direction'.
 
Rick, the only things built special for the climb were the front hooks and the locking plate in place of the bucket. Just about any excavator made has the capability of lifting itself!

Although they may have reduced the counter weight a lot to make it easier on the climb!

I never really though about it! But when you come right down to it I am pretty damn good in a lot of different fields!:sqwink:

I won the Virginia State Championship in IBR 1000 yard competition one year and placed fifth in the national competition out of a field of over 200 competitors from all over the world including the 5 best on the marine Marine Corp Sniper team (none of whom made it past the first round)! I built the gun I shot as well!

I have operated heavy equipment for over 30 years, I was driving tractors in the field at the age of 6 on a farm, I worked on the rail road, I worked as a machinist for Koni America building race car shocks, I will have to pull some pics out of the Bar my brothers and I built for a local restaurant as well!

I am a very well rounded individual now that you mentioned it!:sqwink:

Me too, but in this case, just doesn't appear feasible...


Anyway, I only gamble when I know I will win anymore -- learned that lesson the hard way ;) :)
 
Well you'd lose.

Look closely at the video, specifically between the 5:10 - 5:25 marks and you can see the locking hooks that secure the crane when it is moving up. Would not those locking hooks work on the way down?

So he's never really completely relying on balance, he is secured to the tower either by the hooks, when moving the arm, or by the locking plate when moving the cab.

Send the $20 to the March of Dimes.

The bet was specific -- that they lowered it by crane. I did not bet it could not be done (although I don't know how) -- either way, it wasn't the bet ;) :)
