NAMM is next week. Who, besides me, will be there? It would nice to put faces to some of the names. I will probably be spending a bunch of time in the AES (Audio Engineering Society) booth as I screwed up my ankles and knee a few weeks ago and still have limited mobility.

Please post any gear announcements here and any questions you have about the new gear. I may have a scooter to get around to all the booths. I will post what I find to this thread as well.

Not this year, maybe in a year or two. I just got back from CES in Vegas and still trying to digest the stuff I saw there. Usually I go to NAMM when I don’t go to CES. I do need to get back to CA and do some visiting along with business. I am suppose to be slowing down but it seems things are working in reverse, took the redeye back from Vegas Friday and worked all day Saturday and Sunday. The good news is I’m feeling stronger with much more stamina now, Chemo did one hell of a job on me but I still can only lift a fraction of what I used to.

I cancelled CES travel because of my foot injuries. I am borrowing a friend's scooter for NAMM.
Smart thing to do I walked a total of 20 miles Tues thru Friday, Thats down from previous years. Bryan and I go our separate ways during the day I can’t keep up with him plus we have different interests. Still I’d say I only saw like 25% of what was there.

EV's Everse 12 speaker seems to be the talk of the DJ world today. I ordered one this morning, then thought more about it and canceled the order. I don't really need a 31-pound ceremony speaker, and portability matters.

I've heard rumors that Pioneer might unveil an Opus Duo controller (2 channel version of the Opus Quad). Still unconfirmed.

I was looking at that Everse 12 a few hours ago. I am sure it's an excellent speaker. However, I would be just spending $1,000+tax on a speaker I simply don't NEED.

However, It does make some sorta sense to buy a PAIR of them, and use them as MAINS maybe? They eliminate a power cable. They will also still play the music if the power goes out...Assuming your mixer is also connected to battery power. What are ever the odds of needing this capability for your main system though?

I don't try to keep pace with technology. I wait for the technology to match pace with me.

The products and applications arrive with such frequency now that it's just unwise to adopt something before it proves itself a long term viable application and also as a company that will stay in business.

I also want to choose companies whose ethics are worthy of my business. That's not simply a political or social position. For me, the issues predate all of todays wokeness and politics. Facebook is a prime example. I dumped it a VERY long time ago because it's primary product is data-mining - NOT social media. This line of development transcends mere applications and is now routinely BUILT in to many harware devices.

I don't know how far down the road the point of CONVERGENCE is, but I'm carefully trying to leave myself OUT of it, Right now, the rate of data colletcion often exceeds the capacity of both tech and personnel to make immediate effective exploitation of it. But add better computing technology, artificial intelligence, excessive government corruption/over-reach, declining quality of education, and growing public ignorance - and the potential for a very dark and bleak period in future history is quite likely.

Every period of disasterous wars and oppression are preceeded by some type of industrial or technological advancement and it's resulting arrogance. It used to be primarily measured by advancements in weaponry, and the false sense of invincibility that is so intoxicating to pathological narcissists. Today's emerging technologies however, are new weapons of manipulation, and along with "science" (medicine) are intoxicating modern weapons of tyranny and the domain is global.

Mackie's been rolling out a bunch of new products, including a battery powered 8" speaker. They also unveiled this USB-powered mixer, which has a ton of inputs and output options and will be perfect for wedding ceremonies (I currently plug my mics and iPad directly into my Bose S1 Pro, but that leaves me with no inputs for my piano or other sources). I pre-ordered one and it's expected to ship next month. Price is $299.

Hope you heal soon. My wife has gone through 2 knee surgeries in the last few years and then a foot surgery recently. Been a long journey but she’s recovering well.

When I find technology that saves time for me, creates opportunities I’m interested in, makes my life easier, or helps me serve my clients better, I use it. When technology no longer provides value, I stop using it.

I may be doing better than my friend's scooter. I picked it up today and we found the batteries were shot. Hopefully, the new ones arrive before I have to leave.

My MRI came back that there was no knee ligament tears. Instead, I had crushed the end of my fibula. There could also be a small tear of the meniscus but not enough to cause a lot of alarm. The swelling of all my sprains is going down with each day as is the pain. I just don't want to over do things too soon. I can walk on even ground without the orthopedic boot. However, once I am on inclined or rough surfaces or have to navigate stairs, the boot is very helpful. I just have to avoid twisting left or right for a little while longer.

I have the Everse 8. It is an excellent (and portable) speaker. Way more headroom than my Bose S1. I've even used it in a loud band for club dates and it kept up just fine. I can only imagine how the 12 sounds.

Rick, Are you using IEM , wedges or any monitors at all on your club gigs?

Well, I'm back from the show. I had to miss the last day to attend a surprise birthday party for a good friend. Overall, I didn't see much of interest. The Everse 12 seems good but it is not ground breaking. Friends at various manufacturers hinted at new products in the works but I didn't get enough details to post about anything.

At every show, people ask each other, "Have you seen anything new?" I used a scooter to get around the show because I screwed up both ankles and a knee. My answer to the 'see anything new' question was, "Yeah, my friends have a lot more nose hair than I realized." I really enjoyed using the scooter. I was actually quite surprised how accommodating people were to me, clearing paths, opening doors, etc. It gave me some hope for humanity.

I was on a personal mission to find a new digital mixer. The Yamaha DM3 would be my clear choice if not for two issues, its overall size and lack of Android support. If it were two inches shorter (front-to-back), I would likely get it. The A&H CQ-20B is probably what I will finally get. Its UI sucks compared to Yamaha's or even QSC's Touchmix but I know I can get used to just about anything. It has some firmware coming out that will add DCA groups and mute groups. Hopefully some usability improvements are coming too.

Here are some other tidbits.

Believe it or not, I was actually impressed with Vocopro's new line of 900 MHz UDX wireless mics. You can get up to 8 channels in one rack space. The transmitters looked a bit bulky and I didn't get to listen to them. The mic elements seemed cheap. Nevertheless, it was a big step up for a company that never impressed me in the past. They offer several transmitters options; belt-pack, guitar, handheld, podium, and instruments (such as horns).

Pioneer had a new battery powered mixer. Their booth was packed and I couldn't get close to it with my scooter.

Numark/Denon/Rane/Alto had no presence at the show this year or at least I couldn't find them. Harman/JBL just sponsored some stuff but otherwise didn't exhibit. RCF had some new/upgraded speaker models but I thought they were butt ugly so I didn't ask questions. LD Systems had two new versions of their column speakers. Overall, I thought it was a boring show for DJs. I will post what few pictures I took later.

That would be the AlphaTheta (not Pioneer) Omnis Duo: https://alphatheta.com/en/product/all-in-one-dj-system/omnis-duo/indigo/

It works with their uglier-than-RCF AlphaTheta Wave-Eight speaker: https://alphatheta.com/en/product/portable-dj-speaker/wave-eight/black/
Yeah that speaker is definitely ugly.
As far as the “new” wireless technology, I’m always intrigued, but very skeptical. It’s using 2.4ghz technology. I know everything wireless has its limitations. Some more than others. But i keep hearing people saying it’s "groundbreaking wireless technology". Which usually means no one has used it enough to see the limitations and how big they are. But hey, maybe this time it will be different 😁
