So, we were getting a lot of complaints with the old site of poor load times, blank screens and other technical issues, so I decided this week I was going to scrap it and go with a little cleaner, simpler look. Just finished it up, this is my first time actually using Wordpress on my own to do a site...let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Holy **** dude, you need to seriously get those file sizes down on the images.......25MB front page load, yeah, its a bandwidth hog.

Use this site to help you get that under control.

http://www.webpagetest.org

Nice simple interface on the site, just way to slow on load. Any mobile user will just stop and go elsewhere wasting that kind of data wireless bandwidth.

download wp smush.it plugin for wordpress, will reduce your images alot, works for me! Also use a cdn, it will increase site speed too. Use google pagespeed and webpagetest.org to help show you what you can improve on.

Also I recommend W3 total cache plug in, that is how I set up my cdn(content delivery network) and it also has other features to speed up your site, minifying and much more. It might sound confusing but just google w3 total cache set up and follow the steps and you will notice a increase in speed.

wp.smush it for images, w3 total cache along with a cdn will improve your site speed quick and easy.

Your google pagespeed page before I posted was 49, now I checked its at 47. The smush.it plug in will automatically process all your images on your site with one click. Have you installed that plug in yet? Also set up w3 total cache if you haven't yet, will help a ton. Use this site to check your pagespeed and it also tells you exactly what to change to improve it.

thanks guys, I tried reducing the size of the pics, and it just made them look like crap, so I guess I will just have to bypass the slides.

You must be using a lousy app, you can get crisp images at fraction of the size if it can scale the images properly, a 5120x3840 will look "just as good" if you use an even divider to both numbers like in this case "5" and be just as good looking for "web" viewing on any given slide show. Make sure you use a format like PNG or JPG, hopefully your not using an BMP. You want the file size to be as small as possible for fast loading. If your main page doesn't load under 3 seconds, your going to lose a lot of potential traffic to your website.

People have short memory spans nor do they care about "other" peoples photos, since their primary focus is what service your providing.

It's not the app, it is the theme......there are no slider picture options in it, it auto resized even a thumbnail in to the large format....don't really have much of a choice, either use the slider or don't

Show me the module link

I have no clue what you are talking about lol.....it is a wordpress theme that has a slider built into it, you pick the pictures you want in the slider and it just puts them in

Oh I see, I thought it was a separate download that created the slide show as part of the CMS engine. Are you sure you checked all the options in the Admin panel to make sure it really has no setup options?

The OTHER way you could do this is to try to make all the pictures the SAME size and dimensions, then the slider part will/should keep the resizing on them as all the same size for resizing.

Do you know the dimensions for your slider? My site has a built in slider with the theme and it has recommended image size to use. What is the name of your theme, pm if you want. Also I used to have 7 images in my slider, but recently reduced to 3 because no one stays to see all 7 images, by the time the 3rd image appears they have clicked onto another page. For now until you figure out the image size problem just reduce the number of images in your slider.

Have you installed the smush.it plug in yet????

After installing smush.it point your mouse over MEDIA and select bulk smush it, that will reduce all of your images and help a bit.

I see you have Wordpress SEO by Yoast installed, that plug in slowed my site up and cause other problems so I got rid of it. I personally don't recommend it but know others swear by it.

I will try that now.....I can't get rid of the SEO because I have ZERO knowledge of it and would have none on the site without it.

I checked my website and there were images I needed to compress in my slider that smush.it wouldn't compress any further, http://jpeg-optimizer.com/ was quick and easy. Use webpagetest.org to check your site then click on the box in the upper right of the results page for "compress images", it will take you to a list of images that need compression, I opened each pic in a seperate tab, downloaded(save image as), uploaded to jpeg-optimizer and was done in less then 5 minutes, I only had 4 images to compress. Your site only needs 2 images compressed, so should be quick n easy! One more thing you can check off your to-do list
