Well.... I'm set for a backup machine. I've re-purposed the old HP dv6000 notebook that had Vista as a 'backup' machine which now has Win 7 Pro 64bit installed, largely thanks to this post on the HP web site. Only has two gb RAM but I am upgrading to 8. Has shared video RAM but this machine played smooth video with VDJ even before I upgraded from Vista to 7.

The wife has a new Acer netbook with Win 7 Home Premium and 4gb RAM.

Now I continue the search for a primary notebook for gigs.

If you're willing to put your own RAM in, you can save a lot of money on some build-to-order models by taking the lowest memory option and then buying compatible RAM on newegg.com or someplace similar. I bought a Dell Latitude laptop last year and Dell wanted almost $150 more for 8Gb of RAM (instead of the 2Gb standard) and 8Gb of Crucial memory cost me $45 at Newegg. For the difference, I upgraded a few things and still came out $50 ahead.

Also, if you can wait a month, July-August has some of the best laptop prices because of back to school plus a bunch of bundles (a lot with a Xbox I already see). I got another Dell last year (an i5 Inspiron) bundled with a Dell 5" Streak (mini-tablet) for $700. Sold the Streak for $300 on eBay (didn't need/want it) and netted the laptop for $400.

My 'come-back' tour officially starts with my re-debut on October 6. I'll wait!!
