There's some interesting takes on this...

I mean, I grew up listening to The Stones, The Beatles, Motown, then heavy metal, etc.

The lyrics were implied, but there was no talk of beating your chick up, or calling them b i t c h e s, and how you humped them. Everyone knew what the songs meant -- they were about getting laid.

It was all about making love, not being a domineering dude with gold chains and teeth.

I vote we send all the gangster rappers to Syria, and see how long they last over there...

Yeah but that is real life! It happens every day. They ain't using all them cusswords! .....every other 3 words!

Primarily because TV/radio did not allow it. The internet opened additional direct channels. You can see the rise of profanity start just after people started going online.

This past weekend I was asked to play THRIFT SHOP.. I have the tune, but when the client saw my screen and it said (Clean Edit), he said "Never mind, I wanted the explicit version".. just saying that some events (This was a Policeman's Outdoor Bar-B-Q) may ask for more adult material.

I love my business card it is very specific, so I don't get put in bad situations. It states "Clean cuts only, you will NEVER hear the F-Bomb, if you want it dirty I AM NOT YOUR DJ".

From a business standpoint:
If the client wants to pay me to play nothing but Hawaiian war chants...that is what they will get. it's their nickel.
As long as there are no young ears at the party...I'm okay with it.

Now, as far as my personal opinion on the matter,
I think the occasional bad word is fine... if it fits with the emotion of the song.
But there is a point when it just becomes unnecessary, and adds nothing to the song.
(Kinda like a nude scene in a movie)
And remember, it's not all about BAD WORDS. Because CONTENT can be just as offensive.
A song can be really DIRTY, without having one cuss word in it.
Our radio stations have been beating their heads against the wall about that for years.
