There's a few hits from the 70s/80s I don't have, I found it and now I've got the choice of the original and/or the re-recording/re-mastered. I've heard both the original and the re-mastered and you can definately tell the difference. Thoughts? Thanks!
 
Assuming the remastered/re-recorded is true to the original, I would go by what sounds better, and generally that's the remake, though sometimes they get a bit sterile in the re-record. If the remake is different, I have sometimes stayed with the original (if still available), sometimes the remake. So much depends on the engineer .. when remastering they sometimes get carried away with adding too many things (additional instrument, effects, dynamics).

Like Steve, I have found way too many remasters that have had the energy sucked out of them in exchange for a cleaner sound. I once had a Jethro Tull remastered CD that was really bad.. it was so bad I sold it in a yard sale a few weeks later.

There is a difference. In general the more modern re-mastered version suffer pretty heavily from the "loudness war." In general terms, for 70's I tend to prefer the sound of the first CD mastering. For 80's, the original release is generally my preference. To really compare, turn both versions DOWN until the RMS is about the same.

I have more than enough gain control in software and hardware to play the original version of a song....so I can afford to be picky about the mastering.

I prefer the originals over re-recordings. Always! Even with stuff like Chubby Checker's "Twist". As far as remasters go, I decide case by case. Who can list some re-masters from the 70's and 80's that they really hate? Or go out of their way to find? For example, I ripped my remixes of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Dancing In The Dark" since I can't find them on CD collections.

Its hard to find good quality versions of the originals especially the more older stuff. You just have to keep searching & comparing . A few examples of songs that are hard to find in good audio quality: Sweet Caroline [Neil Diamond], You aint seen nothin yet [BTO], Unchained Melody [Righteous Brothers], I only want to be with you [Dusty Springfield], ...
Generally i go for the originals rather than remakes when i can find good quality audio; a few exceptions: Gambler [Kenny Rogers, i like the instrumentation backing of the re release], I'm into something good [Hermans Hermits , a few remakes around listen first], Lets twist again [Chubby Checker, my original isnt top notch thats why]...
