Mixing...is it really that important?

I grew up in what most would consider "the hood", and so for me, where I come from, if you don't mix, you're just not a DJ. Period.

Could you fix my hood light while yer under the hood...? I'll play you some Doobie Brothers tunes at the same time :)

I'd love to, but they didn't teach me about car hoods in the hood. :p

There'a time and a place for everything and you need to know how to program the music to make things work.

and it always comes back to this HE SAID SHE SAID

there is a place for everything and NOT every show thats out there needs beatmixing done

for newbies you do what you do to prove yourself - dont like it then do as others have done and kept their mouth shut and worried about themselves more

so you do it your way, others will do it their way and thats life

if I really wanted to I would be screaming all over the place do it my way do it this way dont listen to this guy but I dont

I have seen guys that beatmix and have NO idea how to run a show
I have seen Djs that dont beatmix and do a better job

AS LONG AS THE CLIENT IS HAPPY ON WHAT YOU DO AS A DJ WHO THE FRIG CARES

DONT FORCE OTHERS TO DO AS YOU DO (they wouldnt do it anyway thats why you NEVER STOP LEARNING and clearly some still have NO idea)
(I can mix do mix tracks so I am the best dj in the world lol yeah right!!!)

have a nice day

It's sort of like saying what defines someone in the military. Some fight, some cook, some put things back together.

What defines a DJ spans a whole lot of skills and opinions. I could play one song on the radio, talk a little, play another and be a DJ. A club guy like Jynxx would be fired if he did that. Both definitions are correct. I said it before, a DJ is someone who plays music to hopefully entertain others. Every other skill merely defines what kind of or how good of a DJ you are.

So no, a DJ does not have to have any mixing skills and yes a DJ has to have mad mixing skills .. and they're both right.

You are politically correct! ;) However DJs were borne of Mixing Skills. I sometimes laugh that those who don't mix or know how to mix two songs together in harmony are just wasting their money buying DJ Software. If one cannot do it themselves they can have the software do it for them. Same reason why they made powered speakers so it would take the puzzle out of marrying speakers and amps. If one is not going to Mix, why not just use Windows Media player. That would do the same thing for the Non Mixer.

Can someone who claims that Mixing is not necessary answer this question for me.."When is there a time that is not good to mix songs?"

I beg to differ .. DJs were NOT born of mixing skills .. that was a later development (seeing as most early DJs used a single turntable). And when I, and I presume others, say we do not mix .. that doesn't imply there is no attention to making sure songs don't flow together (beat matching) or that transitions aren't thought about. For me, I just don't man the cross-fader constantly (I let the software handle most of it), but I do plan potential playlists based on tempo, style and such.

I did not say "born", I said "borne"! You don't have to use a Crossfader to Mix. That is what sliders on Individual Channels are made to do. Crossfaders are a sort of shortcut in my opinion. Mixing is not that hard, one does have to practice a bit so the skill can be mastered but for those who say it is not needed, I would say that they are either intimidated by it or in denial of it. No wonder there are so many wannabes. Just get gear some songs and a DJ software and one can call themselves a DJ!

But you meant to say born, as it is a better grammatical fit. :) And I know you can fade instead of crossfade, but my assertion was DJing started during a time of single turntables, so the early DJs didn't mix with faders or crossfaders as there wasn't much to mix to. It's a skill, not a bad one to have, just not the end all be all that some wish upon it. If you wish to hang your hat on it, do so. I take no offense to it.

When are we going to see a video of these super skills you have Canute?
I don't have to prove anything to anyone! I know what I can do! My conversation is with those who claim it isn't needed. I say wrong to that line of thinking. Like I mentioned earlier, they should just use Windows Media Player. It does the same thing they do. I can't believe that some of them who can't mix don't even take advantage of the Automix feature in their DJ Software.

But the fact that you love to push your opinion on everyone every chance you get makes me beg to differ.

I also agree that theres a time and a place for mixing. It sets the wanna be's apart from the "good/great" Dj's
and can add so much to ones show when used properly

I never said it wasn't needed either, just not as important in all circumstances. Also, I have respect for those that have it and use it .. I just don't believe it's what defines a DJ.

And borne is the past tense of to bear, as in a heavy burden was borne. If you wish to state that something is part and parcel with being a DJ, it's born of or born with.

During the Wedding Ceremony. ha

I think some of us may be getting confused about mixing and beat mixing. I don't beat mix. I haven't learned how. Would it be helpful? At times, yes. As far as mixing, I do the simple segue type mix from one song to another to try and keep a flow going. There are times when letting a song play to it's very end if good. Other times, not so much.

Beat Mixing is part of mixing. One is more or less choosing songs in the same BPM. Cutting a song to bring in another one is also mixing. Blending two or more songs together is another way of mixing. Slip cueing is where the beats are generally far off but you cut one song to go directly into another without missing the 1,2 beat. Even during a Cocktail Hour I Beatmatch/Mix. In that case I may opt to use Autoplay/Mix for those songs since nobody will be dancing.
