I have a wedding coming up in August and I received a request from the bride that a friend of hers sing the first song. They will provide the voice free copy of the song for me. I don't know how well my system (the one she has requested) will work. I run a EV-300HD wireless mic thru a numark mix deck express mixer. It has worked great for everything I have needed to make announcments but the card in the mixer does not send out a very hot signal. I have to keep the mic close to my mouth and drive the mixer channel to the top to get perfect volume.

I can easily talk over moderate music but I am really concerned about this set up for a singing event, as I am not set up for live sound or karoke at all. I can bring my big rig which has a Samson SM10 mixer and my daughters singing mic's but that is way out of her price range.

Do you guys think we can make it work or should I avoid the issue all together.

Thanks Ray J.

If you've tried the Mic 2 input on the back and it has the same problem, pick up a small live sound mixer like the Behringer 502 for under $50. Should be able to get you the proper gain. Send the output to the Mixdeck.

Where a Mic, DJ Mixer is concerned and also a Live/Mic Mixer I always let the DJ Mixer plug into the Live Mixer. The signal output is usually stronger. DJ mixer to Live Mixer to Outputs.

While generally a good thing to do, in this case the small mixer would mainly be used as a mic preamp, so running it back through the DJ mixer allows it to be addressed as any other input. That and the audio fidelity is still probably in the Numark favor at this level.

Probably is the key word. One has to look at the specs you can put whatever signal you want into the Mic Input but if its output is limited the result will probably be the same. Why chance it, Gain from a Mic Mixer will always be higher than regular gain from a regular DJ Mixer.
My suggestion to the OP is that if you get/buy a Live Mixer to try it both ways. 1. DJ mixer into Live Mixer and 2. Live Mixer into DJ Mixer. That will tell you. If you buy a larger more expensive Live Mixer then definitely option #1 is what I would recommend.

Again maybe .. my Rane will output equal or better than my A&H Zed12fx. Gain may be higher from the mic pre, but not necessarily from the line out.

Here, using a small mixer as a preamp for the mic will most likely give Ray a hotter signal than using the built in mic input, though he would most likely need to bring the signal in through another input channel (unless the mic input has a line pad or the mixer/pre he uses has a mic level out .. the Behringer does not).

My salesman told me to check and insure that I have selected the 0db and not the -10 db setting on the back of the EV-R300HD, which I will do this weekend. He is guessing I have it in the -10 db setting, because he said the numark pre amp on the center channel was more than strong enough to do what I am doing.

Next question: is the mic that came with this unit of good enough quality to handle vocals?

Thanks for all the input!

For your needs here .. absolutely.
