I run 4 CD DJ systems, 4 Digital DJ/KJ Systems, and 4 CD based KJ systems.
All of the CDG based KJ systems are comprised of Pioneer karaoke players (home styled) V10G players or Pioneer laser CDG units several of these systems having been running for 20 years. The digital units are all done on second hand computers and laptops with a total cost of less than $250 each, these units having been up and running for going on 4 years.
The CD based DJ systems are a Numark CDN 90 (my personal favorite) and has been in use since the 90 was released by Numark. Denon 9000 a good unit but had some issues (later straightened out but everyone is still skitish about using it). And two American Audio units that have held up well for several years.
The point is it is not about the equipment being high dollar, it is about making the most of what you have and MAKING MONEY with it. Does it really make sense to spend $10,000 on one system to make $50,000 a year, when you can spend $10,000 on 4 systems to make $200,000 a year?
