Weddings "Love Story" - How To?

Let's see if we can keep this on topic.

In regards to having a workshop come to a small rural area (such as mine), that will rarely ever happen....unless YOU want it to. See www.armdjs.com. Robbie Britton WANTED to bring an event to his hometown and made it happen, and it's been very successful.

That being said, I don't have the desire to bring it to me, so I go to it. I flew to San Francisco in June of 07 to be a part of the Love Story workshop that Mark offered. In June of 07 I was charging $925. Today...$1750. Now certainly there have been many other investments I have made in myself that have attributed to that raise, but the Love Story workshop was one of them and is probably the one consistent item that clients and guests rave about in a positive manner at weddings I perform for them.

In regards to learning from a local circle of DJ's I think that's great. However, everyone must learn to stretch and grow and oftentimes that includes leaving the nest of your home area. The people that are doing the same old, same old all the time will soon become stale for a millenial bride who may be wanting something different from the status quo.

One more point: Seminar = sit in the room and listen to the talking head go on and on about the subject and absorb as much as you are able to.

Workshop = More learning and doing than sitting and listening. You get to practice what is gone over, given critique and praise about what you've given for communication both verbal and non-verbal, and concepts are shared and discussed more openly.

Open yourself up for learning (regardless of who the teacher is). It can be a phenomenal way to grow your business.

I personally would like to see what is so great about these love stories. Anyone brave enough to post some clips of them in action? I don't want to see the whole thing but those talking a good game put them up.

Jake,

I have video footage of my Love Stories but they are only for my own critique. Each Love Story is unique to my clients. Not knowing them, it wouldn't have the same impact for you. I know this is not what you want to hear but if you'd like I could post scanned copies of what clients have said about their Love Story that I delivered if you want. Would that be proof enough to you?

I don't bring up the Love Story in a sales situation at all. I don't charge extra for it either.

Watch Randy Bartletts 1% Soultion series.
Yeah, I heard he had a monthly newletter. Only problem was it came out once a year at best. I don't think his credibility is worth paying money for since he couldn't even commit to his subcribers.

Coming from a family member, now that's a different story.

I have tried it that way as well. Most want their "professional" DJ to do it.

As for Farrell and Mary's workshops, well lets just say they know how to extract large quantities of money from DJ's who just want to be aroung greatness. Or at least what they think is greatness. Names like Ferrell, Mary, and even Bartlett are has beens in the greater overall of the DJ world. A few people who spends lots of money just for the sake of hanging out with them is how they thrive. But then again Amway is still around also. So I guess they are in good company.

Wow, a true believer. :sqwink: I'm with you on that thought.

Here in RI and in the New England area these guys are pretty much unknowns. I know Ferrell tried one of his workshops up in Worcester MA, last year I think. I heard from some other DJ's that he could only get 6 people. 6 people out of the thousands in New England is not very impressive. From what I've read here I certainly don't think the money is worth spending on a workshop just to boost the ego of the presenter. Now maybe if these guys produced less expensive workshops for the part time DJ's which there are more of they might do better.

Are you sure this isn't Ron Auger? :sqlaugh: You two are thinking alike on this one. I must be changing because I agree. :sqeek:

Ok...

If you would take the workshop like Lovestory, why not use it?

Also I was told the Lovestory takes at least 4 minutes to do. Not 2. If you are gathering all of the information, wouldn't you use it all? I'm simply asking..

Also, why do it for free?

Ok...

Next.

I deliberately cut to about two minutes. Since I suggest it be done before the grand entrance I don't want the guests to get bored. I openly tell the client this and I believe that is why I don't do that many.

I do it for free because I don't do that many.

I've seen the Love story done at length. The person doing it took at least 6 minutes and was done during dinner. You must be a good writer and a great public speaker that grabbed people's attention. The music in the background was light jazz instrumental.

Perfectly done, imo.

.... I don't want the guests to get bored...

That is exactly why you should do the workshop... :)

The love story, is different for every couple.. but 2 minutes is not enough time to do a LOVE STORY to the fullest effects...

As a matter of fact, done right, people, the guest, the couple's family would want it to go on for longer than it takes... But that's only if it's done right...

Why do something half ass???? Even if you do it for free shouldn't you care enough about your bride and groom to give them a quality love story??? Or are you of the mentality, it's free so they get what they paid for? Still why do it?

If you would take the workshop like Love story, why not use it?

I took the workshop, and although I don't do the Love Story at my weddings, I gained many new techniques that I still use as a DJ/MC...

The reason I don't do love stories is because most of my clients are bilingual... Spanish and English...

So in order for me to tell a 6-10 minute story, it would turn into a 12-20 minute story because I would have to do it in spanish and then in english... This year I picked up maybe 4 All American Weddings and next year I already have 4 All American Wedding Booked...

They will be getting a Love story, as a matter of fact my 1st love story will be march 6th...

Quality is in the eyes of the beholder. My clients have been happy with the product and guests have liked the idea and presentation. So, with that knowledge, why spend the money on the workshop? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

When I offer it up in the interview I tell the prospective client exactly what it is, how it is delivered, and where it might be delivered. I also tell them that there is no extra charge. Most opt to not do it.

I describe it as a photo montage without the photos. It paints a picture of their lives and how their love came to be through words, sounds, and music.

I actually get more clients buying the photo montage add on, which I do charge for.

Sounds to me like you are a Ferrel pitch man the way you keep pushing his workshop.

Sounds like the couple is going to go ahead with me (about 90% sure right now.... it's down to me and one other guy), so I'm going to do some research and use materials provided by Tom (Thanks!) as a springboard. I already have a bunch of ideas in my head... Including how to do the placement within the flow of the event itself.

I'll record it and link the file, but it's not until July 2010, so don't hold your breath!

Please don't consider this case-closed or stop the exchange in the thread - any further input, ideas, tricks, do's/don'ts, etc. are welcomed now and any time before then!

Thanks guys.

I thought this was a thread started about the Love Story?

Let me check the title real quick... "The Love Story" How To...

Classy answer again!!

I took the class, I believe in it, Mark is the Originator of the love story, if you are going to steal his idea (whether you do it directly or because you saw it in a video) and use it for your own benefit... shouldn't you at least pay the man the respect he deserves and do it as it was intended? By the way, the grand entrance is not the best time to do the love story... Just so you know... :)
