Erm, eh Jon, Vista SP2 is still in Beta... ;)

SP1 is the latest official release, and the only thing allowed on OEM machines until the final release...
 
My top 2 are Fujitsu and Lenovo followed by LG and ASUS.

Never had one problem with Fujitsu and they are still made in Japan.

With Lenovo, if your operating system gets corrupted you have a nice restore button that brings your system back to the factory settings.

BTW, I have a couple older Toshibas that work fine. That's what makes me think it's a new component/driver issue they are using.

Again, not sure, just stabbing at the air...
 
Psst..Jon XP is on SP3 already. :D If SP2 is working fine for you don't bother upgrading though. :)

On the laptop angle: I've had an Acer 5920 series for a year now and it works flawlessly. I bought it off the shelf @ Wally-World and cannot complain one bit about it. For some reason I'd read a lot of so so reviews on Acer but no problems here. :)
 
Rob, when buying a new laptop make sure you invest in something that will be upgradable and expandable down the line. You never know what you may have to do. One aspect of this would be to make sure you are getting a laptop with a dedicated video card, not an integrated video card. An Integrated video card uses system RAM as video memory, isn't upgradable in the future, and generally won't run any video intensive apps including a virtual DJ video feed. Not to mention, if you are running vista, the better the video card, the less load your processor will have, and the more free ram you will have. It can be an upcharge, and is something that most of the "Good deal" laptops are lacking.

It seems with Acer either you love it or hate it. I know a guy who has 2 Acer laptops and hates them. Hes had everything from dead pixels, to dead motherboards. On the other hand I've got an Acer monitor that I really like, and all my experiences with Acer laptops have been great! Its a brand I would attribute to Hyundai, they started off crappy, but were determined to be comparable like the big luxurious brands such as BMW. Acer is on its way up.
 
That's fair enough warning.... btw I'm well aware of the downside of shared ram with video.... honestly I don't do much that is extremely video intensive.... at most I'll be doing karaoke with it and the resolution needed for that isn't very high at all... 800x600 16 bit color heck not even close to 256 color for that matter.....

I don't plan on doing video feeds with this...

At worst it becomes my lighting computer and I use my existing desktop as the gig PC...

This is a great price and my current laptop looks like it came out of a boxing ring after going 10 rounds with Mike Tyson...

My Second ASUS (G1S) in three years and rock solid .... they are the prime manufacturer for SONY Toshiba and a few other brands. :sqwink:

I highly recommend the G1S as it has great video capability as well..

The ASUS gamers are pretty much at the head of the pack for stability and cool running if video is required. I'll look for another this fall with the new SSD hard drive.

Cheap is not always best !!!!!

Yup

I figure even if I have issues with it as Rick says folks have had it still will serve well as a lighting computer and general business computer...

and it looks a helluva lot better than my old one.
 
I've got the computer and have already unloaded extra stuff that I don't need.... and loaded VDJ

I've been playing for hours now and so far no problem-o with straight audio playback. I don't have any video's to try and mix so I can't test that.

When I have more time I'll add winamp and autokdj and test it for karaoke.

So far I'm very pleased.
 
Rick: I still have to do further longer testing but so far I haven't had any problems with the Toshiba and VDJ... for kicks I may download your demo and see if I have problems with that... I have yet to transfer OtsAV to the laptop as it seems this will be a very useable gig pc....

For you karaoke dudes out there.... sorry no s-video out however it does support dual monitors via a VGA port.... a simple VGA to s-video adaptor or converter box would do the trick of getting your lyric screen to a TV or another PC monitor.

Also it comes loaded with a Philips DVD drive which rips CDG discs perfectly with Power CDG Burner... I imagine it will work with Audiograbber too but haven't tested that yet... as I prefer Power CDG Burner
