Last nights party was a bust!

Sir I wasn't in the planning process at all on this one. I agree with you because let's look at it this way. The type of music they setup to play was my era when I first got into DJing. I used to practically live in Club Zanzibar. I had a friend I used to work with that was a DJ and he showed me the basics. I learned how to DJ from listening to those DJ's in that club play. I would leave there and go home and mix the same songs they had mixed since I had most of the songs they played. The only songs I didn't have they played were songs that never got released. Eventually I got my own style.
Now with that said about the only ones who would know anything about that time in music are those who are over 40 and 50. Anybody under that age bracket knowing about that type of music would basically only know about that music because there parents played a lot of that music at home. Now that's not to say people in their 40's and 50's don't go to a bar or club to party. Some do but just think about how many that don't any more.
You would really need to advertise to that type of crowd to make such a party a big success in my opinion. Now you're certainly right about doing the proper planning before you even talk to the people about having this party in the place. Get that part done first and then go and have a talk with them.
The most obvious thing to consider is how are you going to get people to come to this party? What gimmick will you use to get people to come?
How about you stop trying to do any parties that require Postcards. 27 years of DJing and I have NEVER made a postcard or flyer for any job I have done. I just walk in and play and guess what by doing that I created a following.

I don't know where you do your parties or what race you are but for the kind of Parties to which Mix is referring, Flyers and Postcards are the order of the day, Tweets, E-Mails and FB Messages also play an important role in the digital age. We do the same here in Houston, for all Race type of Public Events. If nobody knows where you are going to be, then how are they to follow?
So, in other words, the fault is Mix's. He didn't send out post cards and he didn't let his following know where he (and his partner) would be appearing. Thanks for clearing that up.
The man said he was not involved in the planning. What arrangements he made to get paid or if he was doing the Gig at no charge is his business.

He sat back and depended on the party organizer to bring bodies in and then he came here, whining after attendance fell flat. So which is it, is he building a following or is he simply a hired hand to play the music?

Read what I said. I didn't have any plans in this party. I was just asked to help out with the equipment. I was just told when the party was to be and that was it. After that it was up to this so called promoter his girlfriend to take care of things. I guess they both did it and what they did didn't work.
Again I wasn't in the planning of this party. If I was I would have done things differently.
Mix .. I hope you have learned that with a partnership, you are involved regardless of whether you know it or not. SO ... either take the bull by the horns and direct things the way you think they are better served, OR, fire the partner(s) and do it completely the way you want.
Once people associate you with things that go wrong .. even if unfairly .. you get marked.
This statement right shows why you are failing in this business......you should never consider yourself "indirectly connected" to anything.....when your company is involved, it is always DIRECTLY connected to the event, period. I don't care if it is simply putting your logo on a flier for a charity event or organizing the entire thing, whenever my name goes on something, I make sure I know EXACTLY what is going on with it every step of the way.
Until you adopt this mindset and realize that any action this partner of yours takes directly and substantially impacts you, nothing is ever going to change.
He cannot fire the partner. The partner gives him all his music, he apparently plays all the newer music and I beleive he stores the gear also.
This is the part that I cannot wrap my legs around.
You retired from your day job, to attempt to collect disability --now yer hauling gear around for free.
What am I (and the state of Jersey), missing here? Some times you should learn to keep the hole under your nose closed -- oh, and cut off your fingers so you can't type anymore.

If they decided to do such a thing again if I'm not included in the decisions for that party then I'm out of it all together. They say 2 heads are better then one. With the post card deal you would give some out to family and friends you feel will come to the party. Also you would need to go to places where you see a lot of cars where people party at. Also I would put them on FB and twitter.
Now considering normally the budget wouldn't be big enough to advertise on regular radio. You can use internet radio to advertise your party. You find a internet radio station that will let you play there and as you're playing you can promote your party you're having.
See Mix here is the problem that I see. You have tried these parties before and you have yet to have a succesful one. So the question is why would you even think about doing another one. Spend the time, energy and money on something else. Promoting parties does not sound like your little groups forte.
