Keep in mind too, that I personally own the DJ Scans. The university is renting them from me, and that this was only a test for the first year. Any purchase will have to come out of my pockets, as did this last install.

The cyberlights are rather dim too - which is odd if you ask me, but it may be due to several factors, such as whatever type of lamp they are running, to how much light is present during the time they are being used, etc....

At any rate, it's the kind of deal that works for me......at least for now.

I guess I'll find out at the end of the season how they feel about things and if the university wishes to employ them again.

Yeah, if they are leasing them from you to "try them out" then I suppose it is one way to go. But personally I could have recommended that they go to an arena that employs moving lights and see how they are used and if they would like to use them and then go from there. But it works for you in this case because you can add them to your inventory after they are done if they want to upgrade or something later.

As for the Cyberlights, they are not dim. Even if their lenses and mirrors were completely crusted over (a possibility) they should still blow the DJ Scans out of the water (unless their lamps are almost dead, or as you said they are being used with the house lights at full). The other problem could be if the throws are too short (Cybers are meant for a throw of 80'-100' but that should not be a problem even in a 14000 seat arena), but I doubt that is a problem. I am wondering why they didn't use the Cybers for player intros? They are magnificent units.

Again, congrats.

Sparkie,

You may want to check the Cybers too see if they need new lamps.

A light guy i know bought a lot of HES Intellabeams (12 or 16)
And they we're rather dim. He went threw all of them, cleaned them, repaired a bunch of stuff,(they were toured, then spent a few years with a regional touring band) so they needed some help.

He was puzzled as to the lights being so dim.....So he ordered a new lamp for one to try.......And it was waaayy brighter. Almost like a new light.

The bulbs or lamps on the Cybers may have seen there better days, And may need a service.

If they are "dim" they certainly need service. Mirror cleaning, lens cleaning, case cleaning, and new lamps (not bulbs!!! lamps!!). I recommend a cleaning at least twice a year, and a new lamp after 75% of the possible lamp life.

who cares about WHAT lights you install
KUDOS on finding another smart way to make money!
jobs like this can only lead to...
MORE JOBS LIKE THIS!
there is no "down side"!
(I think you gave us ALL some ideas, as well)

Unless the jobs are not well done, or the products don't perform as the client wants them to.

NOT SAYING THAT IS THE CASE HERE!

But I cant tell you how many times as a designer I have walked into a space and died because in a beautiful space they got sold some cheapo lights and controls. There are several lighting "installers" in my area that I give bad press every chance I get.

I would recommend anyone who is thinking about adding any kind of lighting to their space (theater, church, studio, arena, etc) or show that they contact a professional lighting designer.

It's funny
for all the talk I hear about uplighting
there is really NO ONE doing it in my area.
I know that sounds like a wasted opportunity for me
but it's more of a budgetary thing.
regardless, no one has any way of judging the quality of a good uplighting job around here.

Well really, here "good" might be relative. If the client is happy it is "good". Of course I hold myself to a different standard.

I have seen beautiful designs that the client didn't like and just terrible designs that the client loved.

There is no explaining taste sometimes.
