Today I was in Montclair playing for the seniors birthday celebrations for the month. I decided to use the laptop I put to backup and I first made the mistake of not hooking the wire from the laptop to the controller. I was wondering why when I tried to load a song it wouldn't work. That's when I noticed I hadn't plugged the wire in the controller so I could load a song into either side of the program. I hooked up both the wire to the controller and the portable HD to the laptop. I went to play a song and it didn't sound right. I turned the controller off and on. Then restarted the laptop. It still sounded muffled. I thought it might have been buttons on

the controller were on that should be off. It wasn't that.

So I hooked up the other laptop and it worked fine. No issues. So it looks like I will be using the backup laptop for playing Monopoly and getting online.

So let me ask this question. What would anyone here suggest for a 17" laptop that cost no more than $500. I know I should have a laptop for backup just in case something goes wrong with one of the laptops. I really hate this happened today because I love that laptop. It has several voice overs that I LOVE! I wish I knew a way to transfer the voice overs from one laptop to the other. One of the voice overs is my ex's voice over that she hates. I love it!
 
I'm not going to comment on the new laptop the variance in price between Canada and the US on electronics is so much I really have no idea what you can get for $500 US but why don't you just copy the voiceovers to the hard drive from the old machine?

Mix, do you ever shop on eBay? There are numerous options on eBay for 17 inch laptops, some well below $500. I seriously doubt you need a new computer. The one you have is likely easily fixable. However, if you are resigned to buying another laptop, this is one that is probably more suitable for you; $150 + Free Shipping; click the link below:

There are many others out there, but they might require some upgrades that you probably could not handle yourself, so the one at the link I posted is one I would/could DJ with, just as it is.

Let me warn you again, as I have before… BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER!!! If there’s files you’d hate to lose, BACK THEM UP! There’s FREE backup software out there you can download!!!

Mix, I read your Posts; It seems that You are still at DJ Class 101. I am not meaning to be negative, ... as I am just trying to understand your way of DJing, ... after all of these past years on OurDJTalk.

First question: Are you you connecting the PC to a controller:
  • via a USB cable for complete remote control?
  • sending audio from the headphone jack to a stereo line input?

if by USB:

Is there one or more effect filters (FX) turned on in the software interface (via PC Keyboard/mouse) that do not have a corresponding control on the DJ hardware (controller) ?

If you are still using something like a Denon MC-6000 with updated versions of DJ software on an older computer then there may be some features that are not accessible from the controller, or you may have the wrong audio configuration (sound card settings.)

When using legacy equipment it is critical that automatic updates be turned OFF and care is taken to not disrupt the status quo of the older installation and software/hardware configuration. You may be able to roll back a recent update and restore the PC to a prior configuration status.

When I last had an MC-6000 I used a computer with automated updates turned OFF to prevent changes. It's a conscious action you have to maintain because the operating system will repeatedly ask you to turn on automatic updates whenever it goes online and that is exactly the thing that will mess up a legacy installation..

It could also just be a defective USB cable or USB port at either end of the connection.

It is unlikely to be corrupt files, but rather a corrupted configuration or a software/controller setting that you have overlooked.
