Is there a "rule of thumb" for how many watts you have to consider for each person in a hall? ie: 1 Watt for each person in a crowd of 250 people means you'll need a system to push 250 watts?

If memory serves, the general rule of thumb is two watts RMS per person.

So, for a 150 person room you need a system that does 300 Watts RMS.
There is to many types of speakers for this type of rule to work. Speakers have different efficencies, a certin speaker can get loud with only a few watts feeding it while some inefficent models will need more watts to get the same spl out of them.
I find the equation to be flawed but I have used 5 watts per person for tops. so 150 people would be 375 per side. Sub require more power so 7.5 watts per person.
I run 600 watts to each of my tops and 1250 watts to each of my subs. I get uncomfortable at the 150 person mark. I feel at that point I could use more power.

Smallest gig getting a conventional system get's at least 3000 watts 500 per side for the tops and 2000 for the sub (you can always turn it down)!

I'm playing at a restaurant for a wedding. They're expecting 120 people tops and that will pack the place. I don't have much room to set up, so I'm thinking of taking my Yorkville Stagepas 500, with 500 watts total. Classic rock and oldies. Not much dance or urban. Perhaps a couple of current top hits.

This gig location is small. The owner says it only holds 80 people, but the client said that 120 are coming. This should be interesting. The mother of the bride wanted me to slip in and set up during cocktails and hopes no one will see me. I'll be tripping over people setting up. LOL

Really? I'd think that would be underpowered... I'd think the minimum for a 200 person wedding would be 2 Mackie 450s with a 1501 sub

The Yamaha might work but I think you and your customers will find the sound and quality lacking and it's going to fall short. It's better to have more and not need it than not having enough to use.

I run 600 watts per side and a single 700 watt self-powered sub form most all weddings and corporate events up to 800 people with no problems what so ever. You do not need to blast people on the perimeter. Your music volume should be focused at the dance floor.
Now for schools, I do bring one or two 1500 watt self-powered subs instead of the 700 watt sub.
