Insurance for those not in an org or using WeDJ.....

You can find an independent local agent, howver it is likley to cost you much more.
Mine was over $900 for liability and $60,000 equipment coverage ($10k deductible).

Since the economy went south I've had fewer and less complicated events so I used the DJ association policy instead.
If DJing is all you are doing then you really can't beat the DJ policies.

I recommend not insuring your gear, or at least not insuring it on a piece-meal basis.

My previous gear coverage had a $10k deductible and a half-value over all. The idea was, that I can afford to replace most individual pieces or even an entire DJ music/system, but would need help if I lost everything at once in a disaster, fire, or major burglary.

The half value comes into play because at any given time at least half your gear might be stuff you never intend to replace anyway - so it makes no sense to pay premiuns against it. Music has also changed. That $18 CD you bought with just one good song on it can now be replaced with just a $0.99 download - so why would you pay additional premiuns to insure it?

Chuck,

You can get ADJA coverage for a number of options. $250/yr direct from the broker without ADJA membership if you like. I honestly think that is the best coverage your going to find for the money from a AAA+ rated carrier like Firemans' Fund. So far I have not found a better policy from a better rated carrier than ours with Fireman's for the money. You can spend more & get less many times. No other policy will give you that type of major player carrier for that price point. Our Carrier is several orders of magnitude better than the carriers for either WeDJ or NAME. That's not opinion, that's fact. Call any insurance broker you know that has access to the AM BEST rating systems for insurance carriers. They have no horse in the race. They will tell you that Firemans is several times better & stronger as a carrier than either Penn Central or Great Midwestern.

In the end what really counts when you have a claim arise against you & need insurance is the strength & longivity of the carrier. Our policy with Fireman's is the longest running policy in the DJ industry.

As far as covering your gear, I don't cover my music anymore. I have it backed up in several different locations. (if I was lugging around CDs, that would be a different story) But I do have coverage on all my gear. (fire, theft, car accident, Etc.)

Sparky,

That is a question I would have to ask the broker. Here is the rub. If you have that, how do you prove loss of use? Could a DJ just create a number of bogus contracts to validate loss of use to collect a payment?

I would think that it would have to be limited to something that could be proven. I will try to see what I can find out.

Yes it does! :)

Bill,

I will verify that today.

Thanks Drax.

Bill - I had heard the same thing that you were told. This is why I have been with Zurich International Insurance the last few years. They cover my equipment enroute to and from. My policy is expensive, but peace of mind is priceless, knowing that I'm covered no matter what. Not to mention that it covers ALL of my equipment, not just one system at a time like the policies of the other carriers.

I looked at ADJA for a system that I was going to use primary in a club environment and they would not cover me..well they would but would only cover the loss if I could show physical signs of a break-in.

Since the club/restaurant is open for lunch and dinner as well there is a probability that gear could go missing while the place was open...and I would not be covered then.

Point is, make sure that all of your possible losses are covered. The fact that ADJA will not cover my gear if I am not there is makes this coverage useless.

Remember this also applies if you set-up for a gig and go to get dinner or something. No signs of a break-in to the building...no loss coverage for your equipment.

ADJA insurance does not seem like the best option for real-world scenarios.

Sparky,

Your covered in transit. I verified it today. I got that directly from the broker. $10/$1K value. Best price you can find anywhere.

Justin,

It's far from useless. NO INSURANCE at any price below a 15% value insurance ie $15 premium for $100 prop value will cover you for just leaving your stuff unattended. In fact I just looked. I couldn't find ANY property coverage that allowed you to just leave your Valuables unattended for extended periods of time. Get serious. You really expect a carrier for $1/hundred to replace your laptop when you just leave it on a table & disappear for a couple hours??? If you didn't have insurance what would you do to protect your gear? Would you just leave it on a table & walk away? I really doubt it. S

ADJA is the BEST option for REAL WORLD Scenarios. It is the ONLY AAA+ Rated carrier to offer DJ insurance. Check AMBEST ratings on any carrier, you'll see Firemans is the top carrier offering DJ insurance.

First off I never said anything about laptops so please do not make things up to bolster your argument. I am talking about mixers, players, speakers...you know the kind of equipment that DJ's use.

And leaving your equipment in a secure building while you step outside for more equipment, or to go eat dinner IS a real world scenario.

As to your argument about the cost...you get what you pay for. And IMO ADJA is not worth the money....too many limitations.

Yep, I too verified it. They must've changed it. Last year when I was renewing my insurance policy, I contacted them & they told me they didn't cover it during transport. Apparently they do now.

I will check them out at my next renewal.
