See what happened here is when a company has to redo some drives (many reasons) they still have to decommission them

so I was given an oportunity to decommission these lovelies (256GB each)

a little over 1200 in total, so what dont work can be thrown away and what still works I can keep

What kind of drives are they? Can't tell from the pics. Are they SSD's?

All are SSD's - they are only used for backup but are in a raid array system

so when dates that allow them to upgrade and buy bigger drives the old ones get you can say thrown OUT!!

so thats all I can tell you at present - they will arrive in 3x days to my place so I can go over whats there :)

That's a lot of SSD's.[emoji1] 256GB SSD's would make good system drives, but not enough storage for most of us anymore. It wasn't that long ago that 256 gigs seemed huge. Now I have multiple terabytes in all my computers. I have no idea what I would do with that many SSD's?[emoji1] You can buy a big 10U server case that holds 50 of them for about $4500, so you could build yourself a giant SAN. Problem with that idea, besides the price, is it would still only be around 12TB. You'd get the same amount of storage on three 4TB drives for a few hundred dollars, and they'd all fit in a $100 case. Hard to justify the price difference, even for SSD speed.[emoji4]

When I was working, we always had drives to dispose of. The state had a contract with a company that had this machine that was like a giant wood chipper, and that's how hard drives were shredded. However, it was not free, so we used them for targets... like for shooting with guns. I worked for a law enforcement agency, so almost everyone had guns and liked to shoot at targets, so providing the targets was always welcomed.[emoji4]

Very cool Denny. Can you pool the storage? Use half as one big drive then RAID with the other half? I don't know a whole lot of about the more complicated storage/backup options.

@DJ Bobcat I often quote my 6th grade teacher who was very proud of himself for successfully lobbing to get a brand new computer in his classroom. It was a nice machine at the time running Win 3.1, with 16MB RAM, and a Sound Blaster card. He said "You'll never need more than 16 MB of RAM." :sqlaugh: Even as a kid I knew that was a bad bet. Fast forward ~20 years later, I run literally 1000 times more RAM and still run short sometimes.

Damn, I'm old I remember when having a computer in the classroom was a big deal novelty now the every classroom has a 'smart board' and the teachers run the class from a tablet. Some of the more affluent districts furnish a tablet or Chromebook for each kid.

I'll also never forget the grade book program my school used. It was ancient even by mid 90s standards. There was none of that newfangled point and click stuff - all text based commands designed to run on DOS. No school wide network either at the end of the quarter the data went to the principal's office on 3.5 floppies for report card compilation. That poor secretary. She was a sweet lady too - I spent a lot of time hanging out with her waiting for the principal. :D

Mom still tells stories of how electric typewriters were the catch pajamas when she learned how to type in school (early-mid 1950s). Apparently they're a lot easier to use than manual ones. ;)

Only issue with older SSDs .. especially ones used in commercial service .. would be how close to the end of their lifespan are they? They only have a limited quantity of R/W cycles (mainly write) before they go kaput. I wonder how accurate the gauges or utilities are in determining the values.

^^^^ A fact not widely known. Most people think they get an SSD and it will last forever, but they are much like thumb drives, and they can only be written to a certain number of times before they wear out. Just that it's hard to determine how many times you can write to them, or how many times they've been written to. An O/S like Windows is writing to and deleting from your system drive all the time... Makes you wonder how long your SSD system drive can handle it?[emoji4] All my data drives are conventional, so if the SSD system drive on one of my computers crashes, I just pull out the data drive and pop it in another computer.[emoji4]

I have one in all my rack-mounted computers. I put the system drive (SSD) in the left-side bay, and data drive (2TB) in the right side. I cloned both. I can use the same cloned data drive in any of my computers. I have cloned copies of the system drives of all my computers. I also kept the original Windows 7 drives of all the computers I upgraded to Windows 10. It sounds a little crazy, but I had so much trouble with one of my computers on Windows 10, I actually put the Windows 7 drive back in, and I put the Windows 10 drive away for a later time, perhaps[emoji4]. For a limited time after the Windows 10 upgrade, you had the ability to go back. I don't like having a limited time.[emoji4]

Trouble is I might end up with a few over if others are ready to die or are dead already

they never care what condition they are in just they upgrade to newer ones and are BIGGER so they are using 1TB SSD's now
cant wait for these to be given to me LOL

ok have some work to do now
