When I first started just about 10 years ago, my first speaker stands were Gem Sound from Radio shack. They were getting pretty beat up a few years ago I bought some Ultimate T100 stands from Ben. I hate them. I have had to replace 2 because the part where you tighten the tripod has broke. Now they were under warranty but still.

Last week, I am setting up and one of them won't tighten where the pole goes up and down. Luckily the peg is there to hold the speaker up. So last night, that same stand the other part breaks again. Never had a problem with my cheap ones. I am digging them out for tonight. Hope I can find them.

About 20 minutes or so into the night, one of my Eons isn't working. I just replaced the ports where the cables plug in last week so I am thinking that is the problem. So I trouble shoot and realize the "Expensive" mic cable I had NLFX make for me is shot. So I grab my cheap Radio shack cable and it works great.

During a song last night, my Denon 4500 CD player just cuts a song off mid song. So the whole night I am worried it is going to go out during another song. It has done this before too so I ran a cleaning disc. Anyone have any ideas why it does this? Maybe take the cover off and clean with some alcohol?

Expensive isn't always better. I won't ever buy ultimate stands again. The cables, I am not sure what I will do and the CD player, I will just see how it goes.

That is my rant this morning. Hopefully tomorrow I won't have one to add.

Just went to look for my old ones. Not sure if I got rid of them or not. I did find the other 2 broken ones. I thought I was supposed to give them back to Ben. Must have forgot. Now there are 3.

I dont know what to tell ya Karl. I have owned mine for yrs and just bought a couple new ones in the past little bit (Ultimates)! My buddy Maestro and another friend Arron owns them as well. we have had no issues to date. Its hard to imagine even one issue but it sounds as tho you have now had issues thrice. I am scratching my head. I also own custom made cables purchased at NLFX and know many folks who had no issues to date. How do you wrap your cables? I think you ought to contact Ben on this one Ultimate and the cable guys ought to be the target for the rant. Good luck.

My rant wasn't towards NLFX at all. Just a rant about how spending more isn't always the best.

As to the cables, I probably don't store them correctly. I never got that over under roll thing. So that could be it to. Was thinking of getting a thing to roll them like a hose real.

Not sure about the stands. How all 3 would break in the same spot where the wing nut bolt breaks. Maybe I tighten them too hard but don't think so.

No, T100 or something like that. They have the wing still tightener

well I think we over tighten often with these items. Sounds like the case if three of them have broke in the same exact way.

Karl,
Do you have a Pro Audio Store in your area? If you do, ask someone to show you how to roll your cables the correct way. I have had cables since I first started Pro DJing in 1978 that I still use. I "roll' everything even the AC adapter cords from my laptop. It just takes a little practice and your cables and cords will love you for it. As far as the speaker stands, overtightening can break the joint sleeves, you have to tighten until snug. Not saying that you over tighten but usually that is the cause.
When extracting cables from connections, grasp the connector not the cable itself and pull out firmly, do not yank!

If you roll cables like a garden hose when you unwind them out they will come out as a spiral and be hard to manage and lay flat. BTW I use the over under even on my garden hose, it pulls out in a straight line.

I put my NLFX platinum cables through a LOT of abuse, and they hold up fine.

Either way, they have a lifetime guarantee, send it back to ben. Mostly likely if you can solder you can fix it in a couple minutes though, I would guess one of the wires is pulled loose from the XLR connector.

Karl, this may help in the future:

We've been loading a pair of fairly inexpensive On Stage tripods for over ten years and have yet to have an issue with them. Yep, they have plastic clamp collars.

The clamp collar, which I'm presuming is the broken part, is not there to keep the inner pole and cabinet supported via clamping torque. Its purpose is to prevent the inner pole from swiveling during use. It also serves to keep the inner pole from falling out during transit. Very little tightening of the collar is necessary. You only need to snug it.

The metal pins that insert in the inner pole holes support the cabinet weight. Not the clamp collar.

Hope it helps. :)

Not only do the cables have lifetime benefits but so do Ultimate Stands. Check with Ben on both accounts.

Gee thanx -- that was 7 minutes and 26 seconds of my life I'll never get back -- and he stil f'ed up at the end... :sqerr: :sqeek:

I do the roll up with my elbow, and buy another cheapie cable when it breaks :)

Its not the breaking that is the issue (What when it breaks as you are connecting it at a gig?). I don't have tangles anymore and the cables lay flat when unfolded. They don't look like they are living and moving snakes.

Well, I always carried spares, so no biggie if something broke -- although that was a rarity. Tangles don't bother me, because that's what gaffers tape is made for, and fidelity is secondary in nature at a live gig with a bunch of drunks stomping on the dance floor.

I'll be honest with you, I consider most business gear throwaway -- CODB. All it has to do is pay for itself, and help me make a profit. If it lasts longer, great, I make more money off it -- if not, no loss. They're just tools.
