For the heck of it, bring it out Rox. If anything, I'm interested in what your thoughts are.

Get some meds and bandages ready, surgery and bitter medicine even though well needed is usually not palatable to the victim ...errrr patient!:triwink:

The person that signed the contract was the women who wote the nice review on my Facebook page. If you want her name, I don't feel right giving that out. I fill out my profile asap.

If she was the only one that signed the contract, then I wouldn't even worry about the other person. We don't need nor want client names on here.

I don't think they were asking for the person's name, rather they were looking for what person...MOM...Aunt...friend....etc..

I'm not really friends with any other DJ's so I don't have anyone with experience in this field to give me good advice and constructive criticism.

I would change this ASAP

Networking with other DJs is always a good thing. Like any other group, some you won't be able to stand and some you'll really enjoy getting to know....just like here:)

Networking with other DJs will get you business, will help you get better, and will help you when you are in a bind.

If you call a DJ in your area and tell him you'd like to network and he says no, then you've just found out who is a goof to stay away from, which is just as valuable as finding someone to network with.

This site is networking with people, just in a much bigger geographical area.

Be careful! Some wear fishnets while networking!:tribiggrin::tribiggrin:

Ok now I'm really confused? The other parent involved in hiring us for the party just posted this on my Facebook Fan Page:

"Thank you so much for doing such a great job at the birthday party. Thanks for going with the flow which you often have to do when you have fifty 12 year olds. I can’t believe they danced for 3 hours straight, the music was awesome. The light show made the whole atmosphere even better. All the kids were talking about it being the best party ever and it was all thanks to you guys."

This was the parent that was not giving me a hard time. The PITA parent has not contacted me, nor do I expect her to. Even though it seems like most of the people were happy with the party, I still don't feel so great about it. I will look at this as a learning experience and try to improve myself for the next party.

Thanks again to everyone that added their advice to this post. I learned alot from you guys and I plan on using this forum on a regular basis. It seems to be full of great info. I'm not really friends with any other DJ's so I don't have anyone with experience in this field to give me good advice and constructive criticism.

TRANSLATION: Thank you for taking the pressure off me and letting my PITA husband/wife pester you for 3 straight hours!

Rox must be writin' a book.

He is using a tablet but went to buy another one to do the second page!:tribiggrin::tribiggrin:

Yo Rox, I feel like I'm watching a great TV show and at the best part the dreaded words "To Be Coninued Next Week" appear. You really know how to build up suspence.

My family and things substantially more important than my opinion of your event certainly take precedence.

..to be continued!

DJ Ray,

I was preparing to respond using multiple quotes from your posts and with the intent of helping you but then I re-re-re-read your initial post and came to the conclusion that your are not deserving of any valuable advice, despite having already received valuable advice from Scott Hanna, Bill Kexel, ittigger, and others. Based on your stated behavior, you obviously think this craft is so simple, so pedestrian and requires so little talent and skill that you willingly and deservedly submit yourself to such circumstances. I wish you more.

The re-read quote that prompted me to reach that conclusion was,
"I got a lead from a friend of mine a few months ago. Two of his friends were having a 12th birthday party for their daughters and they needed a DJ. They were low on cash and the Gig was only three hours long so I agreed to do it cheap. They were getting quotes between $400 and $500. Since they were friends of my good friend and the hall was 1.5 miles from my house, I told them I would do it for $150. Since I usually get about $100 per hour, they were paying half price

You do not even have an honest appraisal of your own service. You claim to charge clients $300 for a similar gig yet even at that unprofitable level, you proceed to devalue it by working for 50% of your self professed value. By doing so, you did more than $150 dollars of damage to your alleged "business."

At those rates, I have little doubt that you are not operating an insured, profitable, legitimate dj service. If you have or claim to have a large music library, I doubt it is a legit, licensed/unleeched library. To legitimately posses the minimal tools of this craft requires more than you are charging.

You should heed what Scott has offered as his advice is valuable. He is apparently willing to facilitate and foster such discussions, probably with full hopes of changing your behavior for the better, specifically the bad behavior common to your kind of competition. Scott is obviously more tolerant and hopeful about you and the never-ending parade of past and future clones.

Well Rox, I respect your opinion, but you couldn't be more wrong. You assume too much (and you know what that means). It sounds like your a bit bitter about DJ's that low ball their pricing and take business from you. I'm not one of those people. First of all I did a favor for one of my very best friends (who is a web designer and IT Director that designed my website and does all of my internet optimization for free). I am also establishing a new business, so I am willing to do a gig at a more affordable price to gain experience and get exposure. I've been in sales for over 20 years and there's no better advertising than "word of mouth". I guess when you started your business people were just throwing money at you and you were turning down gigs left and right! I think not, everyone has to start somewhere.

As far as thinking the craft is "so simple", it's obvious that I don't or I wouldn't be here for advice on how to improve myself.

$100 per hour is not running a profitable, insured legitimate business? Your way off buddy. It was a 12 year olds 3 hour B-Day party at a small hall 1.5 miles from my house. It took me 4 minutes to get there. I would have charged $300 to $350to a stranger. This is a fair price to my customers and I make a decent profit as well. This wasn't a wedding! I don't low ball my pricing, if anything I lose more business to the low ballers out there than I'd like to admit. I have a DJ company in my area that does weddings for $695?? It makes me sick and I'm sure that's the feeling their customers have by the end of the night as well.

As far as insurance, I belong to WEDJ, where I get a discount on insurance
(1,000,000 Liability and equipment coverage) for $500.00 per year. If you read my post I've been DJing for over 15 years so I have built a strong legit music library. I also belong to Promo only which I get the latest music every month at reasonable prices. Anything else I need to get for a specific event is purchased through Amazon. I don't even know where to get free music downloads! I thought sites like that have been shut down.

I wish you would have given me good advice instead of ASSUMING things and reading deeper into something that was not there. You are probably a great DJ with lots of valuable information that someone like me could have used.

Here's some good advice for you,“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.”

Ouch... Rox!

But, he is right about the devaluation of your business by offering such a deep discount.... even if it was for a near and dear friend.... Now if this was in trade for the services he's giving you in web design then maybe it's worth it.... if you like working on the barter system.... but, for me unless the barter system puts food on my table... it's just not worth it.

Unless you barter with a bar or restaurant. :triwink:

I think Rox did go a little overboard but we have all come across nonprofessionals too many times. Take the advice of Rox as constructive criticism and that he is trying to light a fire under your a$$ to get you going.

I've only given a couple deep discounts. However it's been family or very close personal friends and not 50%. I'm running a business not a charity.

I just hope your friend gives one of your friends a 50% discount on his services.

Agreed, but my friend designed and maintains my website for free. I told him if he ever needed anything from me I would be glad to help him out. So I did. The amount of work he's done for me would have cost thousands if I hired a web designer. And yes he designed and maintains my cousins website for free as well. He also fixes all of my families computers for free too. We've been friends since we were 9, so we do things like this for each other.

DJ Ray,

Wow - totally unexpected. I was hoping there would be a book of knowledge thrust upon us.

=)
