How high does the price of fuel have to get for you to change your driving habits?

Is your big full size van your daily driver?
It’s all I have. I don't have the luxury that some do to own more than one vehicle. Let me ask how do you pay for gas? I ask this because a lot of gas stations charge more to use a card. I pay with cash. For me no sense of giving them more money. The price of gas is high enough.

Here’s the problem with current electric cars, today I filled up my Toyota Corolla,$52 410 miles of range it took 4 minutes, when electric becomes that convenient people will switch
Here is a way to view things, how many times do you take long trips over 200+ miles in a single day, do you have a class II charger at you home. So do you stop on long trip let say every 4 hrs. Let said you take 4 trips of around 400 miles. Then it means very like you be making least one stop like you usually do each way of around 20 mins to charge. In which time you grab food & use the bathroom. That’s about the same amount I usually stop for, more if I sit down to eat instead of just grabbing food to go. What you won’t be doing the rest of the year is going to the gas station every week or so.That is where the convenience is.That is if you have a car like a EV6 or ioniq 5. If you have a Bolt or Kona, yes you will be there much longer on a trip, but they do take them on road trips. In 2019 I read a Tesla model 3 crossed the US in 48hrs and that is with charging. This is why it is important to ask questions, talk to people who have one so you know what is possible & how to do it. Also to avoid areas where there isn’t Fast charging you’ll need. You’ll use a route planner and a app for the charging network. You’ll need to know your cars charging curve so you know how exactly how long to charge to when fast charging. Most I know do have multiple vehicles so if charging is a real issue take the other car. Only the real diehards have replaced all their cars.

You are in NJ use BJs gas, they have the lowest gas prices, get their credit card and get additional 10 cent of a gallon. You will have to get BJ membership but split it with someone and/or go in and shop, somethings they have good prices on..
I know where every BJ gas is on my routes. My van has a 31 gallon tank, it’s over $120 to fill that puppy up, but that is a Business deduction. Filling up my SUV hurts some although I get reimbursed for some of my mileage it still feels like I’m getting mugged every time so fill-up. But prices seems to be going down some.
The nice thing about BJs is they don’t charge extra for their credit card & I don’t carry very cash.

I hear ya. It is a paradigm shift. Myself, I’ve pondered this. I drive to my cabin in West Virginia at least once a month. It’s about 200 miles door to door each way. i do usually stop for gas, ice, beer, food along the way. So I can see how I could make it work eventually. Right now, Theres not a lot of charging options for me outside of Cleveland Akron heading down to the woods in West Virginia. I’m sure that will change and I eventually will be able to get charged in Marietta Ohio right before I cross to 100% hillbilly county😁, so not ready for prime time for me yet. But it’s possible that renting a car once a month with weeken rates would actually cost less if I was saving money the rest of the month using an EV. but I know me, and having to rent a car each month would be an inconvenience, even if it saved me money.

i did drive a Tesla and have been a passenger several times. I love the technology. Was super fun to drive, felt like a rocket, super quiet, incredibly simplistic design with really cool features, and we drove the model 3, the cheapest one. . As a passenger, watching the Tesla cameras recognize street signs, lanes, people, animals, etc was really cool and I’m excited to see the technology advance.
I did drive a Chevy bolt. Fun, pretty cool, just not as cool as the Tesla😁

im sure if I owned one, I’d get a level 2 charger, so the normal charging would never be a problem, which would be pretty nice. I just think I’ll be an old geezer by the time these become the prime option. But they will eventually

You're also going to find that a LOT of the public chargers are out of order.

Maybe but you can view that online, which ones are operation, charging rate, including which ones are busy. They can Alert you when they’re open. I wonder how many check first before heading to a charger. If you see 50% are down at a location, nobody has checked in there, then that’s not a charger you may want to hit. Electrify America and Tesla has the much more reliable systems. The big issue I hear about are the Tesla superchargers between LA and Vegas Those Tesla superchargers backup around peak holiday seasons. Of course you could use a regular fast charger if you have Tesla with an adopter but No just wait in line. My daughter sent me the TikTok about just such situation.

California says says 35% "zero omissions"by 2026, 100% by 2035. That doesn't sound like many years to me.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the day when an electric vehicle is a better option for overall driving experience. If and when it's a better option, California or anyone else won't need to mandate it and the government won't need to offer rebates. People will buy them. I don't believe EV's will be the environmental saving grace some are wishing for once you consider the electricity needed, the rare minerals needed, and the millions upon millions of dead batteries. Plus the current resale value of an electric vehicle is tough because of government rebates for new ones and people's fear that buying a used EV means an expensive battery replacement coming soon.

I'm with Scott on this one. I LOVE the technology. I had a short drive in the electric Mustang I found it real fun to drive. I will likely be buying a new truck in the next couple of years I was looking at the F150 Lightening but as of right now especially in my area it falls short of what I need. If I live long enough to see the advancements I can definitely see it happening in the future

Let me say on Friday to fill up cost $83 and Saturday another $26. So that's $109. Ouch! I will go out in a few for a small run.

Gas dropped here yesterday and is expected to drop again tomorrow for a total of 20 cents per litre less now. if it does drop tomorrow it will be $1.83 a litre or roughly $8.30 a gallon

It's amazing that Canadians pay this and don't put up much of f fuss.

I guess that's the difference considering a lot of that is taxed added onto the actual price of the fuel.

I have a strong feeling that if national prices were $8.30 a gallon in the USA, our economy would severely shutter. Some stations in California have krept up to those prices, but I Imagine that very few people actually get fuel at those stations.

I was going to buy fuel today as the local station I typically buy from just dropped to $4.49/gallon, but I figured I would wait until tomorrow as it appears prices are trending down a bit more. Another station is $4.45 with cash payment, but the station I prefer uses 100% gasoline with no ethanol. I prefer it over the 10% ethanol fuel that 95% of stations have these days.

As the recession sets in, and demand cools off at least slightly, I expect fuel prices to drop back down below $3.99/gallon this fall.

Oh we constantly bitch about it but at the end of the day we need it so we pay and yes we are paying tax on tax with fuel. Some provinces have cut their portion of the fuel tax but it's really only a few cents a gallon here in NS we didn't cut it. On the upside most of that tax goes toward roads and healthcare here we have no toll highways and free healthcare so I guess it's the trade off. I can drive less but I can't not get treated for a bad ailment if it occurs

Wow, that’s almost twice as much I paid. It was $4.34 day at BJ’s today. I’m surprised you haven’t told us to stop complaining, I knew gas was high over seas but I didn’t think it was so high in Canada.

The F150 is pretty much sold here, I don’t even think they are taking orders anymore for the current year. I did see online someone didn’t pickup a F150: from the dealer. The sticker was 93k but it had every option in it. Likely there markup on it on top of the sticker. I’ve been stopping in dealers the past 2 weeks, multiple deposits on many of the in demand cars & suv. And no real date of when you’ll just your car if you order. Now I’m only looking at EVs so regular cars might be different. The Bolt had a 6K drop from GM, then a markup at the dealer of a few thousands. I can only said it’s going to be a interest next 3 months. I also got news Chevy going to stop the production of their full size vans in two years and do a redesign, I thinking it will be electric. My van is already heavy, close to the max weight full loaded, can’t imagine how much weigh with a huge battery. very likely I’ll be retired by time my current van days are up.

It's always been high here just much higher now. Before the increases we were paying in the area of $4.00 a gallon

I got kinda lucky, i bought a Tesla right BEFORE the price of fuel skyrocketed. Love my truck, but use the Tesla 95% of the time. It gets reall nice not having to buy gas. Add to that around Denver there are a lot of places to charge for free. Can't beat it. Plus the thing is crazy fast and autopilot is very very nice to have.

With the amount of driving I do it basically washes out the payment in fuel savings. Keeping my truck for things i need the truck for (Off-Roading, towing, etc). Actually ordered a new truck! But the Tesla will remain the daily.

Depending on your states tax benefit, cost of fuel, and cost of electric/free charging, it could save money if you bought an EV as a second car.

That's considering if you have the money to buy one. The price of gas has gone down to less than $4.00 in this state.

If you have a lower budget there is the Chevy Bolt or ID4 base. Should under 30K with the rebate. There are both federal & State rebates. Or just get plug-In Hybrid if you don’t want to go all in There is a ton of new EVs due out the next few years. Or just stay with regular car and drive less when gas prices peak.

Went to my Mom's in Delaware on Saturday. I have a 2019 Toyota Camry that is such a comfortable ride on a long trip. I pulled 41.5 mpg during the trip with my son in the car with me. I started with a 419 mile fuel range, and today, after putting over 350 miles on it since I filled up, my fuel range is still 181 miles. Regular gas 2.4L SE. Not even the Hybrid version.

I was also pulling 85 to 90 mph on rt 404 in Delaware coming home, and on 695 on the home stretch lol. I wasn't exactly trying to increase fuel mileage by driving 65 mph or less the whole time lol

I actually thought the same, but once i ran the numbers it worked out the other way. With the amount of fuel i was using...purchasing the tesla and driving that most of the time costs less than driving my truck everywhere all day. Even with insurance in there. I worked the numbers on a 2 year period, including payment, insurance, tax rebate savings, depreciation, maintenance, etc. Heck, now that cars APPRECIATE rather than depreciate my numbers will look even better. If it didnt save me money on a monthly basis, i wouldn't have bought it. You do have to drive A LOT to make it worthwhile though.
