Hip Hop and Rap the same?

2) Let me clarify the "garbage" comment......I love old school hip hop, rap...what ever you want to call it.....It's the "new" breed of rap; the Lil wayne...Soulja Boy...and the rest of the thugs that have nothing better to do the rip off the originals and do the schtick....IMHO they're all posers.....and inho again, doing a great dis-service to the style of music that evolved in the 80's to the real rap/hip hop...and to the REAL hip hop/ rap artists.....

Get a vocoder, write some lyrics about doin or getting done by Shawty (or for that matter, anything derogatory; that way the kids will surely want to listen to it)...as long as you have the words Shawty, gop and the other catch words form that urban dictionary web site, invent a stupid dance, buy some bling and you're a rap/hip hop star in 2008/2009.... (Notice nothing about talent?).

You mentioned Elvis...big difference is; he had talent.....I don't think I'll be playing Lollipop or Crank Dat at a wedding in 2057...but hey, Elvis gets them all up.....

But then again, that's my opinion.....
 
Well, since I started this thread, its about time I put in my thoughts.

I don't think spoken words or singing makes a difference, there are plenty of hip hop songs where it's spoken word. I think what makes the difference in that area is the subject matter of the song. Hip Hop is more upbeat, fun while rap is about ho's, shootings, gangs, etc.

I do think that a lot of stuff out today can't be classified as hip hop because it is so negative. Probably the most recent actual hip hop group, in my opinion, would be the Black Eyed Peas. While not every song was a happy one, but much like Flash's "The Message", "Where is the Love" talks about actual issues. I know hard to believe, a modern song that has a message to it.

I know that Ducky brought up the idea of modern DJs owing something to the hip hop culture. I've got to agree with her. Speaking of DJs on the whole, we wouldn't be much of anything without the likes of DJ Cool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, or more recently Jam Master Jay. These are the guys who helped form this image in the minds of society that a DJ is not only a person who plays music, but a person who can use music as a tool to create a party.

Hip-Hop vs. Rap: What's The Difference?


What comes to mind when someone talks about "Rap Music"? More often than not we associate Rap with the gangsta or hardcore styles of Rap Music because of all the negative publicity that sent record sales soaring in the late 80's/early 90's. The industry embraced this phenomenon by purposefully feeding the hungry media with more and more controversial artists. Soon, whenever the word "rap" was brought up... negativity towards women, sex, violence & drug usage was also brought up and it seemed that the style of rap music itself was defined by this ONE sub-style.

The industry knew that there was money to be made off the non-gangsta styles, but it was hard to get those possible fans to listen to a RAP album. Radio stations were also afraid. The irony lies in that they had tried so hard to create this nasty publicity that was now backfiring on their other artists. The Music Industry soon had an epiphany... "Hip-Hop"... It's perfect!... it's already associated with rap so... it can be the new label we stick on the more radio-friendly styles of rap music.

It worked! People afraid of Rap music could now say... "It's Hip-Hop!" Radio stations could now say "It's not rap... It's Hip-Hop... Did you hear that new "Hip-Hop" album?? Will Smith isn't rap.... he's Hip-Hop!"

Rap= Bad Hip-Hop= Good!

I say NO! Rap Music is like Rock Music in the aspect that there are several sub-styles: Light, Pop, Hard, Heavy Metal, Punk, Classic and Oldies.... Rap Music has several sub-styles too: Hard-core, Pop, Booty, Enlightened, Radical, East Coast and Old School. Hip-Hop is a way of life... rap is the style of music.... Much like being a Redneck is a way of life and Country is the style of music or being a Head-banger is a way of life and Rock is the style of music. Hip hop consists of many elements including: DJing, Rapping, Graffiti, Clothes & How you present yourself and treat people. It's a culture surrounding street-life and brotherhood that has had a significant effect on many cultures around the world.

Don't let the media/music industry feed you a line and twist something as fundamental as Hip-Hop into something it's not.

You're listening to RAP! Don't be ashamed!

The song "Cop Killer" by Ice-T (who now plays a cop on TV) has done more damage to the image of Rap/Hip-Hop then any other song has damaged any genre of music. The sad thing is that "Cop Killer" wasn't even a Rap song it was his attempt at Rock!:sqeek: The gangsta Era of Rap ended in 1997 with the death of B.I.G and Pac. Have any of the Rap Bashers here ever listened to any of Nas, Jay-Z, Common, K-OS, Tribe Called Quest, or Kanye's albums? The subject manor may not be your cup of tea but the talent of the lyricists can not be denied. Even 2Pac's big hits were gangsta but he was a very talented poet.
 
Will Smith gets my respect. The rappors are not even in the same league. Who was cool was Tone-Loc, Coolio, Run DMC, MC Hammer and the like. The rappors of today have no talent. They need to learn how to sing and stop wearing their pants down on the ass.
