Garbage, Crap, thats what our parents and grandparenst called Elvis. Devils music, Jungle music. Oh the horror, the indeceny of shaking his hips on Ed Sullivan. Oh my god , look at the Beatles, how dare they call themselves professional when they cant even get a haircut like Ricky Nelson. All they do is shake their hips and shout yeah yeah. What happened to the real talent like the swing bands? Same shizz different decade.Led Zep admits to pirating so many riffs from other artists. Sampling or stealing. Even the rock gods are guilty. Yet we dont bash them.

Hip Hop was formed with the blends of Rap and R&B mostly stolen samples from the past. It bridged a gap between the two and allowed some singers and rappers to meld together in a song. For instance Mary J Blige and Ja Rule. By the way Mary being labeled the Queen of Hip hop Soul.
I guess I hit a nerve there. I was just asking a question. I have no problem with non-DJs posting here, I just don't really get it. I used to be a waiter, but I don't post on ourWaitertalk.com if such a thing exsists
Maybe he feels he has something to offer. Most retired DJ's do have experience which can be most helpful to a forum like this.
To me Hip Hop was old school, but it's gone unfortunately. What we are left with is crap, I mean rap. It has no place in the music world, unless you enjoy noise produced by talentless wannabes.

I've gotta say, I'm not impressed with all the bashing of hip-hop and rap on this forum. As DJs, I think we owe a lot to the hip-hop culture; it advanced the idea of the mystique of the DJ. It furthered the idea of a DJ being a little more than someone who sits behind the board and pushes play; it turned DJs into artists and producers.
I grew up being told that the music I listen to is crap by people who were told the same about the music they listened to when they were growing up. I'm up for breaking the cycle.

I find that I have a difficult time doing a great job when I don't enjoy the music enough to get into it. There are sometimes a few songs that I don't care for, but a whole genre?!?! That's just not good.

First of all...........Patrick your opinions and thoughts are appreciated by me, and if you step back..I am going to come to your house and kick your ass until you post again on ODJT!
2. Why is this an argument? There are so many variables, and there are so many exceptions to the rule..this argument simply is like beating a dead horse!
3. I disagree with liking everything you play...for I bet, 99% of us djs, there are songs that just dont do it for us.
4. The golden rule of "the customer is always right" is the point to be made here! Who cares if you don't like that rap crap...many of clients do, so put up with it. I don't like swing/jazz...but I will put up with it!
It astonishes me, that as djs, and collaborators of the future on djing, we are choosing to dis' (pun intended)......certain types of music. Let's put on our thinking caps, and use our dj knowledge to talk about something informative and positive! And this is coming from the pot stirrer...yes me...Adam!
I came back to this site to gain knowledge...and I come to a derailment thread like this?? It's real sad!
Anyways....hows' bout that cold weather we'd be havin?

i dont think anyone has to enjoy rap or hiphop...
I personally grew up in the city of Syracuse and have always loved the hiphop culture
Everything from DJs spinning music and scratching to MCs and hype men to break dancers and stomp groups
this would be my reasoning for loving all of hiphop, from the old school to whatevers new
but just to post, that its crap and intolerable and nothing good can come from it

Ducky, I don't agree with anything you said, but I do respect your opinion. I don't owe anything to the rap/hip hop culture. If anything they owe me for playing this garbage. I don't like rap. I don't like the way it sounds. I don't respect the people who record it. Sorry but I can't fake it or pretend I like it because I don't. To me it's noise pullution, so I try to avoid it. I don't promote it or encourage anyone to listen to it.

For my part I appreciate hip hop music. It's got a dance beat and people like it. Hip hop is generally clean and suitable for all audiences. Will Smith has done well for hip hop music and he could always get 'em out on the floor.
To me, rap isn't music at all. It's spoken word to a beat. I've noticed some rappers singing rap lately which would technically make it music.
In this area, rap is not well received by over-40ish audiences. They'll dance to hip hop but as soon as the rapping starts, they'll clear the floor. This is why I'd love to be able to get the new hip hop releases without rapping in them.

I'm with you Ducky. We're about the same age. It's an endless cycle our grandparents hated rock and roll and now our parents hate rap. I guess it's just the way the world works.
Yes, rap/hip-hop did add to the mystique of DJs. Back in the day it wasn't rap unless there was a DJ on stage scratching. Nowadays it's all done digitally and the DJ, if there is one on stage is just there for show.
Personally I grew up listening to rap and always was a big fan of it. It used to be about going out and having a good time. There was always some aspect, undertones if you will about showing off in rap music. I won't deny that but now a days the majority of it is about how many girls they've screwed, how many diamonds they have on their wrist, how many bathrooms they have in their house, and how many Bentlys they have in the garage. That's what makes me sick about it, it's just disgusting. The rap stars of today attain fame by rapping about material things they have now that they never had before and how all girls want to get in their pants because they've got money. I get it, maybe it makes sense in the ghetto but I cannot see most of middle America really being able to identify with that. Now it's just pushed down our throats the same beats over and over again, the same lyrical content just the words are changed up a bit between each song.
