New DJ
Holy crap....I spent several hours last night, and several hours this morning, getting rid of a browser hijack virus...some POS redirect bug that wouldn't let me get to the forums (here, or anywhere else)....it would let me get to the webpage I wanted, but then everytime I went to go to a page on the website, it would redirect me to somewhere else (and on and on and on....).

FYI, the redirect starts with "the.feed.yard" (without the periods in between).

I tried Trend Micro, SpyBot, Gmer, Malwarebytes, and ended up using Combofix to finally get it.

What a freaking headache.

Several hours here and there. Time = money and I assume your laptop and DJ'ing business is important to you.

I'm glad you resolve the problem and good looking out posting the anti-Trojan software to fix it but the best fix to never have this sort of problem again is purchasing a Mac.

Solid, most stable and proven OS
Highest quality hardware
Elegant design
Virtually virus free (no need to debate this, you KNOW it's true)
No aftermarket anti-virus, spyware, trojan-ware, spybot and firewall softwares running resident in memory
No more "freaking headache"

Yer right -- they make an awesome paperweight

I use mine, to flatten out the stack of $20 bills I saved by not buying another one... :sqlaugh:

Sorry to inform you but the only reason Macs are less prone to viruses is not because of a superior OS... it's because Macs are in the minority of PC's owned by the general public and business'.... if the story were flipped and Mac was the more popular PC and IBM was the boutique PC... guess who would be attacked and targeted more....

So, this BS about mac being superior due to fewer virus attacks is just a bunch of hogwash....

Not to mention the limited amount of software being developed for Mac.... Mac is practically in the dark ages as far as software dev is concerned. They look cool.. but looking cool doesn't always get the job done.

LoL... that was funny but when the next Nimba or zero-day viRuS comes out, I won't be unplugging my computer from the Internet and renewing my yearly anti-virus subscription like PC users. You start to forget about that $20 stack when you're rebuilding your system from a virus crash and praying your last backup is safe and current.

Awwwwww he likes toy computers.... hahahaha

Seriously though.... I've had PC's all my life and have only fallen victim to maybe three viruses and each time I was able to recover everything without much fuss....

True there are some really malicious viruses out there and they do primarily target PC users.... but, the careful user and the aware user can prevent most of the supposed attacks by avoiding questionable websites and software....

But...it's starting...

There's not one piece of software I lack for my Mac. Every DJ/sound/graphic art/productivity app you use is probably made for Mac (even Office). The OS for Mac (OSX) which is based on the Unix kernel, the oldest and most secure OS available, is flat out superior to all of Microsoft's come-up-short offerings (NT, XP, ME, XP Pro, VISTA and most likely Windoze 7).

Windows shotty OS is primarily the reason PCs get viruses. Take the following cases in point:

Lotus Notes - for years, Notes was the top for market share for businesses as the mail server of choice. There were and are still very little known vulnerabilities against Notes
Microsoft Exchange - poorly designed, bloated and under constant hack. Updates/patches/fixes almost daily. Exchange keeps my company's LAN admins busy.

Oracle databases - to this day, there are far more Oracle databases out there than SQL and there are still very little known vunerabilities. No constant database worms / hacks, etc.
Microsoft SQL databases - less market share than Oracle yet still there are known and constant hacks/patches/fixes/worms, etc.

Apache webservices - The majority of the planet has Apache webserver running the Internet at the highest levels. Why are there very little hacks/constant exploits against Apache like there are with Microsoft IIS? This would be the biggest target for hackers and they'd be able to inflict the most damage crippling the entire Internet.
Microsoft IIS webservices - Attack the weak link. Most of your web exploits will be against Microsoft IIS. Constant holes and exploits because of who's design... Microsoft's.

PS2 - lots of people have these... any viRuSes <crickets>
Microsoft Xbox - a game console with viruses... tsk, tsk...

Apple computers - smaller market share, great product, very few exploits.
Microsoft PCs - put one directly connected to the Internet w/o all the bloated anti-this-and-that software and you're swiss cheese...

So don't give me the bigger market share argument. Some of you guys mention $price... that's acceptable and a valid point in not choosing a Mac in comparison to a PC. Other than budget, there's no good reason to choose a PC unless your must-have application is absolutely not made for Mac.

When it comes down to it, regardless of market share and HOW the viruses get there, you're probably 95+% more likely to get a virus, trojan, spyware, malware, adware, hacked and hosed on a PC than a Mac...:sqembarrassed: those odds are not for me and my (hard worked) 12k+ song collection. :sqwink:

Sorry but I just do not buy into Macs propaganda tactics and scare tactics.... it's bull sheet and we all know it... if it were so "Superior" then why does the majority of business not embrace it as the best most secure OS.... simply put.... Mac is not the favorite because of lack of business software development.... if you compare the Mac version of most software that is designed for PC... for the most part you will find that the Mac version is more of an after thought and more or less on there to hopefully sell just a few more units...

Unix is nothing more than a glorified Dos... it's based on Dos commands to begin with.... guess what Unix is IBM and not Mac unique.... but IBM (generic for PC) opted to develop an OS that was independant of the core Dos OS.....

who on earth would use their business computer for everyday things? I have a separate machine that's only used for the business side, and rarely connects to the net, and will do no browsing or anything on it. It's strictly for music playback and lighting control. I do have AVG on it and keep it updated regardless.

As for the mac not getting them, somebody else already said it's because they are the minority system. I have seen macs get hit before because the user was too complacent about the "mac doesn't get virus's" legend.

I believe Unix was being used long before DOS was created.

I believe Unix was being used long before DOS was created.

Was it? Hmmmmmmmm.... I'll have to check that... as I understood Unix was developed based on the DOS but using straight english comands instead of command lines with a bunch of switches to do different things

example simple commands like Run X Program

I have 2 Macs now but use to have only one (a Powerbook G4). I surfed the web with it and only had the internal firewall enabled... In 4 years, I never had a single virus or virus-related system rebuild on it.

I've since gotten the Macbook Pro so I mainly surf using my old computer. I still surf on my new system but don't worry about viruses because the exploits pretty much are non-existent. I'm not trying to argue the point that there are absolutely NO Mac viruses but I challenge you to name one. {{{starts Googling and sorting through 3 year old Mac-virus articles}}}

You're very wrong on this one... here's a little research: Unix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Unix_history-simple.en.svg" class="image"><img alt="Unix history-simple.en.svg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d9/Unix_history-simple.en.svg/250px-Unix_history-simple.en.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/d/d9/Unix_history-simple.en.svg/250px-Unix_history-simple.en.svg.png

LoL... I like this quote ""Unix is the best screwdriver ever built," said Dr Salus.

I may be wrong about the origins of Unix... but, I stand by the fact that Mac is not impervious to viruses. It's just less targeted because it is in the minority of computers owned.... and therefor not as fun to attack because there aren't as many to attack.. malware creators crave mass destruction and you can't get mass destruction from a handfull of macs.... as compared to the zillions of PC's out there for attack. It's just not as much fun...
