Spin down on a hard drive isn't controllede by Vista...Yes Vista as well as XP and 7 have power saving features that will put the drive to sleep.....certain drives, particularly the WD's (green series) will spin down automatically.

I can't use a WD "green" xternal drive on mt Bell PVR for that reason. It spins down; the PVR cannot wake it up....

I didn't write it down but somebody has a program and I think it was free that keeps your hard drive spinning non stop.

I will see if I can find it again

Best to stay away from store built drives that are advertising themselves as backup drives.... not that they are bad drives but they do typically spin down on their own and are loaded with sometimes unremoveable backup software which eats up some potentially useable space and make it un-recoverable even if you re-format the drive.

I prefer the WD My Passports for size but read carefully as some of these do load backup software and some don't. I also like the WD MyBook's I have a 1 TB that I was using in live gigs with next to zero problems... I did have one glitch but, I think it was my own fault..... but, the WB Mybooks are bulky and require you to plug them in to a wall outlet. Their advantage is: Larger drive capacities and don't rely on your USB bus for power thus relieving some stress on your USB ports.

The external I just built has an advantage over most store bought drives in that it has both the eSATA connection (which requires USB for power) or USB (which depending on the hard drive may require an additional USB port for more power) With a custom built drive you can pick your components where-as with some of the no-name "store" types it can be anything from a WD drive to a Toshiba or Hitachi.... (When talking about other than WD and Seagate brand externals)

That sounds confusing I know.... but take a look at what is offered at sites like www.tigerdirect.com and www.newegg.com you'll see all kinds of off brands from Iomega to Fantom all using various drives even different drives between their respective models all depending on who will supply the cheapest drive for their enclosures...

I built mine so I know the quality that went into it.

Thanks Steve that was the point I was making as well.... but, made it badly or atleast explained poorly thanks for clarifing my point on drive spin down.

A Friend. I always ask around before I buy. You never know what bargains you will find. Two on the same day for me. Mackie Mixer and Seagate HD.
