iPod Ots and Rick

OK guys and girls - years ago I was using OTS which I liked - $hit it was about eight years ago :sqeek:.

Now I have gone back to CD and using a PC or Mac Book to find and play a song fast (using iTunes)

I'd really like to go back to using a computer prog (Rick!) and am wondering if I can transfer my iPod and Mac Mini music to any (Rick!) program.

Your post might be better as a new thread, but since it's been up a couple days and Rick hasn't responded, I'll give it a shot, based on what I know about computer D.J.ing (which I'm sure is less than Rick).

If your files are .mp3 or .wav, you will be able to use them in any D.J. application, in either a Windows or Mac machine. If you've encoded using itunes-specific file-formats, your choices may be more limited. The ones that are most difficult to use, overall, are songs purchased from itunes. This really sucks and sends a poor message, IMO, when you can "steal" music and actually play it, while some songs you buy you can't play(!?)

Steve is correct, you can't go wrong with MP3 or WAV format.

iTunes and WMA files are a PITA. You can either burn them to an audio CD and re-rip them into one of the desired formats, or use a conversion program to do it for you. Either will get you a bit of loss, but still not too bad.

Do a search for iTunes to MP3, and you will find lots of programs out there -- the one I usually use for tests, is called Switch Sound Converter, and works pretty well ( http://www.nch.com ). It's a freebie, but if you want to do all formats, you'll need to pony up the $19 or so.

I've been getting most of my online tunes from Amazon of late. Excellent quality in MP3 format, with album art, etc. Only downside, is they are in VBR format (Variable Bit Rate). Usually no big deal, and sound a bit better, but VBR's don't seek as quickly as CBR. If yer doing scratching type stuff, you would most likely want CBR, but for normal wedding/party stuff, the VBRs work just dandy :)

What is included with the RMX?

Perfect timing, as my "production unit" RMX arrived last week. (Prototypes come without accesories). The RMX ships with a carrying bag, a USB cable, a cd with the drivers and the Virtual D.J. LE software on it (both PC and Mac), and a manual for the RMX.

Herc Driver update

About the problem everyone has been having has anyone tried doing a new install using the drivers out on the herc site? I just got mine today and have not set it up yet(at work my start to feel ill) But my thoughts where to use the drivers posted to the site first as a clean install. Any thoughts comments?
 
Got my unit Friday night. Prior to installing anything I uninstalled my full version of VDJ. I then ran the driver set I found on the Herc Web site instead of what was on the disk. I then installed the VDJ LE version off the disk and started up the app. Every thing ran perfect. I then reinstalled my full version of VDJ. Once I completed these I reran my BPM and TAG search just to do a refresh of my DB and I have been a MIDI fool all weekend. I love this device for what I paid for it. Reading other forums the Item seemed to have lag issues with those users but i have a pretty beefy machine and nothing else runs on this box. I saw no issues with performance or response time from the device it's self. one thing I did notice was the gain seemed to keep resetting its self. is that part of the VDJ app to reset gain on load of a new track? besides that I loved the RMX and suggest to anyone buying that the full version of VDJ is the way to go with this unit.

Congrats!

Although I don't use VDJ I do know that the gain setting can be set to reset on load of a new track or it can be set to maintain the gain..... (i never worry about this with OtsAV)
 
got home and dug through the settings and customized it to a tee now I have absolutly no reason to complain unless... "my mom throws away my best porno mag".... haha just a happy guy wtih the unit.:sqlaugh:
 
Anyone in Austin?

Steve, please give me a shout if you know of anyone showing the RMX in the Austin, TX, area. I plan on using this with Mixxx in Linux, and someone from Hercules helped the Mixxx developers get them both working correctly.

I'm not familiar with Mixxx software.

Heh, you'd be alright not coming out until later this year. I read you were in Las Vegas and probably dealt with the heat there, but it's creeping up towards the 100s in Austin. :sqeek: I do want to hook this up to a Linux box and see just how well RMX and Mixxx work together for an old electronica dj.

Hate to admit it, but I didn't know anything about Hercules' dj consoles until I began looking for dj apps in Linux. Mixxx so far has been the best one in Linux although it doesn't have as many features as VDJ. Francois at Hercules helped out the project by, I'm guessing, providing them with a demo unit so they could get Mixxx working with RMX. Everything I've seen on YouTube about Hercules has been pretty encouraging.

King I will have to check out mixx only reason i have been running xp is for the reason I didnt know of a prg that ran on unix you know if it is compatibale with ubuntu?

Oh yes, it is. 1.6.0beta2 should already be in the repositories and you can get a .deb package for 1.6.0beta3 from their download site. :sqcool:

Unfortunately, they don't have Linux binary packages for other distros, so other distros have to settle for the older 1.5.0 (like Fedora) or compile from source (tried several times, failed miserably). :sqconfused:

By the way, I contacted Guitar Center and they are ordering this for me. They're going to let me look it over in their store before I buy, but all of the reviews so far have been pretty positive.
 
I am realy crazy for HERCULES RMX/STEEL.....can i buy these setups from online money transfer.I m from India,,can online shopping sites give these mixers?
I saw on virtual dj site these mixers are available for shipping.
