Well thanks a lot steve, i sure hope i can get my piece soon. Btw there was a posting in the vdj forum by a pro level user tat rmx has a lot of flaws and its buttons are either unresponsive or malfunction the command. And also the led lights are on only for a few buttons and not all of em. Any comments pls? Cos this has made not just me but many other ppl to think twice abt gettin an rmx. Just look into the tech support section of the community link in virtual dj site. Pls give ur opinion as u do represent the hercules company and this info if false might pose a threat to many vdj users like me. Thank you :)
 
I can't speak for Steve, but I get all kinds of flak for mappers for my software too, and here is my take...


When you write software that can map to MIDI controllers, you basically send out a mapper that is simple. They are text files, that can then be edited by the user, to do what they want -- they are not an end all, just a starting point.

In my case, I included lots of comments for the different mappers, so I DON'T have to keep writing mappers -- that is the users job.

So, somebody comes along, and creates a crummy mapper file, distributes it all over the internet, and next thing you know -- who gets the blame -- the hardware and software producers :sqerr:


As a software or hardware producer, you cannot control what people put into these text mappers -- you can only give them a starting point, and hope they can figure it out... ;)


IMHO, the whole point of using MIDI and mappers, is to empower the end user to use their brains and creativity, and create something for themselves :)


Not picking on you Shaun, it's just thats how this stuff usually happens, and bad info starts to multiply quickly on the net...
 
Well rick, i would totally agree with you, but all this is correct from a software/hardware/programmer point of view. For some who know nothing about it, it may seem quite complicated. Cos majority of the people would like their midi controller to behave like how the manual says, any setbacks or flaws would be at first criticised. I understand, cos i've fiddled with some mappers, more over, i took notice of this since the post was by a senior professional user. I just wanted a professional opinion, apart from that i'm not against anything else. :)

I'll have a look at the VDJ Board (which I only frequent once in a while), to see if I can find the posts and/or threads you're referring to. If you'd like to PM me the links to the posts you're mentioning and/or let me know the user name of the poster you're mentioned, that would be useful.

I did find out that the anticipated "street date" of the RMX consoles, at least in North America has been pushed back about a month, to the first week in May. That being the case, I'm not sure how it's possible to have a review at all, either bad or good, so I'd like to see the posts and thread you're referring to.

My demos and experience have been with two prototypes of the RMX, and while I have had issues along the way, they did not include problems with malfunctioning and/or non-responsive buttons. Before doing any live demos with them, I beat these units up, looking for issues of this type. It is true that not all of the buttons on the RMX are backlit, however, but my understanding, from an engineering standpoint, not backlighting all the buttons lessens the power draw from the USB port. In other words, in this case, it's not a flaw nor an error, but a design decision. Do I agree with it, or would I have done this the same way? Not necessarily, but at least I understand it. And now, so do you.
 
Steve, thanks again for workin on the info i need for gettin the rmx in india. Btw, i've pm'd u the name of the person who made that posting and a link to that page. Hope it would be helpful and i truly hope, all wat is said about the rmx turns out to be false :)
 
I don't want to hijack a thread from the VDJ forums to here, but several of the "problems" the user initially reported were simply preferences (he would have preferred something were setup or functioned differently - and as Rick pointed out, the mapping between software and hardware evolves over time), learning curve issues (which he admitted), and/or difficulty doing things in ways that are FAR from the way Hercules, or Behringer intended.. in this case using Hercules and Behringer controllers to run dual instances of Virtual D.J. (four decks).

Maybe I'm too much of a "keep it simple, stupid" kind of guy, but isn't running drivers from competing products together asking for trouble? I personally found this to be true about two years ago, when I tried to use my Hercules MK2, just for the controls, while using the soundcard portion of a Rane mp4mixer, and had huge problems as well. But I didn't claim that something was defective because these products didn't work together in way they were never intended to, simply because I wanted them to.
 
Well i understand that he wanted the console to behave to his liking. Its just that his review has scared me and has made me think twice so as not to get some issue and fiddle with it forever. I had absolutely no issue with the mk2 and it worked perfectly well. I just wish the rmx does the same. Steve btw, any info about its accessibility in india? Thanks :)

The RMX is built better than the MK2, which was built better than the MK1.

Btw, if ultimately u find that there's no distributor or agency in india that can cater to my needs, can u pls find out if it can be shipped to me? I am very worried about the shipping procedures, lest the console gets damaged, and can u pls quote the price including the shipping charges to chennai, india? Very sorry for the trouble, but i have no one else to turn to.
