Then: I read Silvio's note to check the firmware (I'm up to date with that), and uninstall Music Manager from the disc, and reinstall it from the link. In the meantime, I added songs to the collection I wish to have on my 2500, so I decided to start over and try it all again.

If you started using v133 without creating a new database that could be a problem too. The very old MM version is not compatible with the new one.

For some reason, formatting FAT32 from a DOS command line didn't "take" overnight, as the drive still has a name, and all the files from before. I'm trying again, as I post.

Silverfox, I've downloaded mp3tag, which now joins emusic tag editor and tag and rename as tagging tools I have now.. how do I scan and fix tags using it?

Once you complete download and run the program you simply point to the drive your music is on in the "Directory" box and it will scan all you files and display them in a table.

I click on the various columns to sort them in order and view each group for possible repairs or edits.

I look for things like the frequency, codec , tag id being standard.

If there are repairs or conversions the "Tools Options" tab shows what you can fix as well as the "Convert box".

This has been the best "at a glance tool" I've found to quickly scan all files and look for wayward additions to my library.

It takes time...

I use Tag&Rename generally, because I like the interface better (just personal preference on my part). I just did a new set of files (about 1500 songs I had ripped in ages ago, and never properly tagged), and it took me a few hours to go through and clean everything up, add all the album art, etc.

Just regular manual labor -- there are no quick fixes :)

Ok, after two more attempts (formatting a drive FAT32 is a larger ordeal than I'd anticipated), I finally succeeded, and moved most of my files to the drive on the 2500. Inexplicably, close to 100 files did not transfer. Then, using the current version of Denon's Music Manager, I created a database, adding all tracks on the drive to a database. Success: 1202 files - Fail 3573. Even WORSE results than I'd gotten previously, which prompted my complete reformat and restart of this process. According to the Music Manager software: "A zero-sized frame is found." What does this mean, how do I resolve it, and why does THIS software have so many problems with my files, when every other one I've used does not?

Did you know that the HD2500 can format your large/small drives to FAT32?
Yep, its found in the ULTIL mode.

Did you copy/paste or use MM to transport them?

Zero frame means that your mp3 files has broken headers.
A quick way to fix this is to use Tag&Rename.
Open T&G, select all files and save the tags without making any changes.
This will rewrite the header data and fix them (in most cases)

MM is a pretty smart basic app.
Its protects you from questionable files so that they dont give you any trouble while playing live. In your case, you have gained broken files by some other app.

In order to try and isolate whatever issues I'm having, and considering my present lack of faith in the Denon software, I didn't use it for this task.

Copy and paste. (actually, I used a program called folder clone).

What IS a broken header, how did it break, and why does Music Manager have problems with files that no other digital music player seems to have?

I'll give this suggestion and the others a try. Looks like I'm starting over again today, for about the 6th time.

Just a thought here, but are many of your tags in UNICODE format...?

Not sure if the 2500 handles UNICODE...

The first DJ Software I used was PCDJ Red (the "old" Red), which didn't like Unicode. I would get tags that looked like three letters in a foreign language, although the tracks would load and play. When I first encountered this, I adjusted my settings in emusic tag editor to always use "standart". I've never been sure if it was supposed to say "standard" or not.

As recommended by Silvio, I'm reformatting my hard drive (again) via the util menu onboard the 2500. There's no progress bar, so I'm going to go do some errands. When I return home, I'll see if the display will tell me "done" at some point, and then try to import using the Music Manager software, again as Silvio has suggested.

One thing to be aware of, is Tag&Rename defaults to UNICODE data, unless you change it in the Options->Tags settings. So, check whatever programs you might be tagging with, and make sure they are set to MBCS (Ascii/ISO).

So, if you say batched saved some of your tags with the UNICODE option set, then that's what you get...

Again, not sure if the latest 2500 firmware handles UNICODE -- the manual says ASCII.

Yes, with current versions it does handle UNICODE, but its best to keep them in ASCII, so Steve make that change in T&R.

You only need to format the drive once if it was not done in a long time.
What you need to do now is run T&R to batch all of your files so that it can refresh your ID3 tags (without changes). When done, run MM again (full DB) and see if it cleared things up. PCDJ could have broke your headers. (I've seen this before)

Current update:

Ran all my files through Tag and Rename, as suggested.

In the process of importing all my files, this time via Music Manager which does this on the slow side, but it seems to do much better how I attempted this before, via Windows. So far, I've had FOUR files rejected by Music Manager, and it was for things like saving an mp3 at 48,000khz versus 44.1khz. I UNDERSTAND what the error message means, and can easily fix that, especially on four files (versus the THOUSANDS of errors I got last time out).

I'm at the most optomistic I've been about this project since I got the unit.

Silvio and Rick and Silverfox: thanks for your help.

Also: I'd like to participate on the denondjforums (both with questions to pose, and to "pay it forward" once I know what I'm doing), but the site doesn't view properly for me. In IE(8), I get the left half of any forum page on the left half of my display, and cannot see the far right, which sometimes leaves me guessing what's there. There's no scroll available, and changing the zoom doesn't provide the missing elements of the page, either. Firefox is a little better, but I have the same problem with it. Do I need to use my Mac and Safari to use the forums? (I haven't tried that yet.) I can screen shot any of this, if I'm not explaining myself well enough.

Keith was telling me he was having problems viewing the forums too... but, I think he resolved the issue but I don't recall what he told me he did. His problem was the flash on the site wouldn't load on his IE 8 64bit and the assumption was there was a problem with it being 64bit... dunno send Keith a PM maybe he can tell you what he did and that may solve it for you.

Rob:

Working it out via PMs with DoubleA (a mod on their forums) right now.

So far, Denon support (both official, and via forum) has been very good.

Your files must be clean & tagged properly (no inbedded images, Etc.)

If your files are a mess (not tagged correctly) ... you will have problems.
