With Windows 7 backup tool I was able to cherry pick files out the backup. They're all stored in regular ZIPs. Sure you have to go through a lot of archives to find the right file but it was a life saver one time. I booted into Ubuntu and mounted the external backup drive, copied the files over and was good to go.

Windows 8 seems to have changed how the files are actually stored. I'm not 100% sure because I haven't looked at a W8 backup through Ubuntu but it looks different on the surface in Windows.

I'm just guessing here but a 3rd party backup tool is probably your best bet for interpropablity. Our old buddy Softjock Rick used to swear by Acronis.

Personally everything's in the cloud (sensitive stuff is encrypted with Veracrypt before upload). I only depend on Windows Backup for copies of my virtual machines but it wouldn't kill me if they were lost. I could just as easily setup SyncToy to copy my VM directory to one of my externals.

Bob is right .. a full restore on a new platform would not work. 'Cherry picking' files would work without error .. however restoring cherry picked apps with codes stored in the registry would not work.

You may be able to install it to a flash drive .. but it would only work on that one machine and the flash drive would have to be in each time you needed the application. Installing to a flash drive does not mean you can plug it into any machine and use it.

I think he's asking if you can install VDJ to a flash drive and use it on any machine .. and the answer is no.

I'm certain he has no idea what an ISO is .. nor how to use one. Most users don't.

How do you link VDJ and MilkDrop? I thought it was only for WinAmp?
