Yeppers...I got tired of the Gingerbread Cookie and decided to put my pic up. This was the only half-decent one I could find on the computer. It was taken about 2 1/2 years ago, outside during a rather muggy August evening.

Good thought, there! That's a nice, natural smile...a great picture of you, Rob! I would still keep the formal-looking pictures, but take maestro's advice and use a new background for your avatar picture, post it somewhere on your website.

Too much going on in the background for me to isolate... plus it's not on this computer....
I really do need a pro to do this but time and money are a factor...
Funny, I've never really liked my smile... maybe because it's always looked forced in posed shots....
If I could ever teach my wife to focus first then take a picture I'd have her shoot some candids.... but she don't listen to me..... maybe I'll pay a photographer to photo a wedding and a less formal function like my upcomming sweet 16 I'll be doing.... capture some light effects in the process and have no need to edit one in later.
I like the third picture - Black background w/ green & white lines but use the other, more close up picture (where your eyes are all the way open) of with that background.
You sure you weren't smokin' something with you took that third pic?

Rob, I Love ya, but....the above great advice is what I've got to go with.
I've been to the poll and your smile seems too forced and not natural like your avatar, the backgrounds are too distracting and way too bright and busy.
Just my opinion...

Or try this, set up the camera on a tripod, set up your gear (or not...I'll explain in a moment), set the timer, and "play DJ". Do this a few times, the candid shot comes from you not knowing when the timer is going off, but you still will need a few shots to find a good one. It's a cheapy way to eventually maybe find a good action shot.
(Here's where I ruin the Facebook experience for all my friends)
This shot (my FB profile pic), that I then played with in Photoshop, is a posed shot using the method I explained above. Not only is it posed, but there is no gear in front of me...and not only is there no gear in front of me, but I'm not wearing pants either...seriously.

But that does give me a great idea... I wasn't gonna take another photo until I had my black shirt laundered but if I wear my vest over it no one will be the wiser.
