Don't waste yer time Steve. He apparently does 250 gigs a year, yet manages to be here 365 days -- not sure how that works... ;)
Rick you are a LIAR! You see how you go twisting things again? Did I ever state that I do 250 gigs EVERY year? That was a statement made for 2010 when I was doing the Hip Hop circuit almost every night plus rentals. You make these bombastic statements so you can get others to believe you and have them on your side.

Some of us can make 2 speakers sound pretty darn good.
I will never go in a club and use two speakers. Every one of those KJs I know who does it ends up sounding lousy. Kinda hard to get good sound when someone is using a small 4 Ch Mic mixer, cheap mic going straight to two powered speakers.

My side...?

I wasn't aware this was a war, and needed to get people on my side. If I did, I would have dressed appropriately... ;)

You generalize WAY too much .. I don't do karaoke in a club, generally it's in a lounge/bar/rented room, and the powered tops alone are sufficient .. not ideal, but sufficient for karaoke. I can get a lot out of them except maybe the last octave or 2, which is fine for karaoke, and NO, they don't sound "tinny". I would bring subs only if I knew I would be DJing much more than karaoke.

It is quite evident that you don't comprehend my comments. I have stated MY experiences here in Houston. I also DID NOT say that they all use only two speakers. I was referring especially to the ones that do use two speakers. I can't help it if you feel it addresses you.

For the sake of argument, Karaoke is nothing more than recorded music sans vocals added to live vocals sung by a singer. If a particular Club/Bar/whatever is of a particular size where I have to carry X amount of equipment for Music/Dancing why in the world would I carry less if it is going to be Karaoke? It is the same sound that is needed. You use the word sufficient and I use the word mediocre. You know your stuff so obviously I would expect for you to have proper sound. Again, I was referring to most of those that I see here in Houston, they are a dime a dozen.

I got it covered now Bob, I can connect or convert just about any format to just about any input on any TV. S Video is what I used to use but lots of new TVs no longer have S Video inputs.

BTW, I value Karaoke Sound just as much as regular Music and Live Sound. What I mean by this is that I set up a full sound system even for just Karaoke. In between Karaoke songs I would often play snippets of regular songs so I don't want any differentiation. My objective is to have singers feel like they are singing in a Live band with full bodied sound. I get longer and non stop Karaoke sets that way unlike the tinny sound from a system with just two speakers.

I hear ya. Just got to know your customer. In a club or corporate contest I give them better sound, effects processing, and quality mics. But, a lot of my karaoke is just rentals to small groups who want a fun and cheap party solution. For them, it's a single Eon15 in mono, and I replace the SM58's with Chinese knock-offs that look and feel the same and work fine at a cost of $10 ea. No one knows any different and when a customer comes back feeling guilty and asking how much they owe for a broken mic I can just smile and say: "Not a problem, don't worry about it!" For this customer the way they feel about the service is more important than the quality of gear.. which they don't really understand anyway.

Unfortunately I DO comprehend your comments and when you say :

I will never go in a club and use two speakers. Every one of those KJs I know who does it ends up sounding lousy.

I can only assume I am included, since I am a KJ at times and you know me.

While karaoke is ostensibly just recorded music without vocals, the reality is the recordings are not of the same fidelity or dynamic range of most dance music. Therefore, if one understands this, having subs isn't going to make a great difference as there is significantly less stuff there for a sub to reproduce. And given that most people won't dance to a karaoke singer, it's sort of like bringing a canon to a knife fight.

There is nothing wrong with having subs, and if the parameters imply the need, I bring them .. it's just instead of you saying things like "I feel having subs makes the sound just a bit fuller" .. you say "Every one of those KJs I know who does it [uses 2 speakers] ends up sounding lousy" .. doesn't quite endear you to those of us that can make it sound pretty darn good.

The purpose of KAraoke isnt to make the music sound like a club system performance but to find a way to make an amateur sound as good as possible. Remember I have done karaoke many places including Japan and its not about the music but more so the music to give a sort of guidance to help the singer sound better. A sub doesnt make the singer sound better in most cases your effects, mixer and mics do.

But yet Steve (149); you're an idiot because you just don't comprehend what he is saying. You are mediocre and lazy because it; you know your stuff yet, you don't bring proper sound.

I shall start my quest for 2 scoops ... starting with the box of Raisin Bran.

I can only assume I am included, since I am a KJ at times and you know me. I do not know you from actual personally meeting you nor have I heard you. Like I stated, I was referring to my "live" experience here with some others in Houston.

While karaoke is ostensibly just recorded music without vocals, the reality is the recordings are not of the same fidelity or dynamic range of most dance music. This is even more reason to have "more than adequate" good sound. It needs to be enhanced. Therefore, if one understands this, having subs isn't going to make a great difference as there is significantly less stuff there for a sub to reproduce. I get lots of Bass from ALL my Karaoke songs! And given that most people won't dance to a karaoke singer, it's sort of like bringing a canon to a knife fight. The Cannon will ALWAYS win the Knife fight!

There is nothing wrong with having subs, and if the parameters imply the need, I bring them .. it's just instead of you saying things like "I feel having subs makes the sound just a bit fuller" "I still stand by that statement.".. you say "Every one of those KJs I know who does it [uses 2 speakers] ends up sounding lousy" "Again, I am relating my "live" experiences here in Houston".. doesn't quite endear you to those of us that can make it sound pretty darn good.

Some responses above in Red. Sadly, almost every Band and every DJ think they sound great! That is a very subjective assumption as opinions differ. I also never said I am the best. There are several other DJs in Houston that have serious sound and they all have one thing in common, they don't have regular DJ setups and Equipment.

Canute .. first, welcome back, but you keep missing the point. No one will argue that a great sound system will always beat a good one .. the issue is that what is your opinion, you seem to state as fact. Most karaoke here is just 2 speakers, primarily becasue the places it's done, it's tough to fit in more.

So as I said, while I don't disagree that having subs would be good, I'm also saying 2 things: that I can make 2 speakers sound good enough and that having subs for karaoke would only bring minimal gain, due to the content.

Not everything is as it is in Houston.

Well believe it or not we are actually saying the same thing, aren't we? I am relating my experiences here in Houston where a neighborhood Sports Bar/Pub holds and average of 300-400 people and a Real Dance Club can be expected to be decent sized, if it holds about 600 plus. If I did a Karaoke Gig at an Apartment Clubhouse or large home I may use one small 15" Sub. I personally don't go after the small spaces as the Revenue just won't be there. That post was directed to those who only use two speakers regardless of Venue size because they feel that is all that is needed for Karaoke. If you want to put yourself in that category, then that is your prerogative.

We don't tend to do karaoke gigs in places that hold 300+ people .. and spaces that large, you'd need a large system. A typical karaoke place is 30-75 people (maybe up to 100 on a good day) .. in fact, I've never seen karaoke (except regional contests) held in a large venue .. primarily becasue the crowd wouldn't be sufficient to fill a fraction of it.

Apples to oranges.

Again you are correct. The venues here are large and that in most part is what dictates the size of the system not necessarily the size of the crowd. Once my Shows start, there is hardly ever a break 4 hours straight. The rotations are also very long.
