Has Your MacBook Pro Been Recalled?

MS will keep Win7 running for those willing to cough up the funds to pay for the support. This will not be cheap and will be a select group of users. Everyone else will be left to fend for themselves. From a security aspect, it would not be wise to remain on and actively use an unsupported OS with known and unknown, unpatched and unaddressed flaws.

If it's a performance machine it really shouldn't be on the internet anyway...I have an 12 year old laptop running Vista it runs like a top. It has occasionally been online but it's been rare

I’ve always had good anti-virus software, and practiced safe browsing, and knew enough not to click on links in random email messages. I have no interest in porn sites and I’m also pretty careful about what I install on my computers and where it comes from.
These are the differences between you (an IT person) and other people.

Sandbox mode is a virtual PC. This is not new, by any stretch of the imagination - and people have found ways to both attack and infect virtual machines with viruses that can 'break out' of the VM / Sandbox. Additionally, this is Windows - I guarantee you the hackers are already hard at work on exploiting this.

My favorite versions of Windows were 3.11, 98SE, 7 and 10 (seems ok so far). It seems every other version of Windows is 'good'.
I am fully 100% aware that sandbox mode is done in the virtual setting , and I was talking about sandbox in general, not the Windows offering, and when I need to run things or browse websites that are risky, I use 3rd party programs.

In all my years using Windows, and having owned dozens of computers, I’ve never had even one virus on any of my home computers. Had plenty on computers I supported at work, but never at home. I’ve always had good anti-virus software, and practiced safe browsing, and knew enough not to click on links in random email messages.[emoji1] I have no interest in porn sites and I’m also pretty careful about what I install on my computers and where it comes from. I do have Linux VM’s I use if I ever wanna browse a risky site. I have EVERYTHING backed up to servers running iXsystems NAS software, and they are very secure. I’m actually not a big fan of Windows, but Macs don’t impress me all that much either. I use whatever works best for what I want to do.[emoji4]
I dont get viruses from any of the porn sites I visit😉, I also run ad blockers and anti-virus programs , like anyone should, its just common sense in 2019 not to click on any links from random emails. I know ive gotten a few viruses from time to time, but nothing that wasnt able to be dealt with using various programs to remove that crap.

I totally understand - my point was that a 'sandbox'/vm/things like it - are not a guarantee of safety.

Links from random emails are the tip of the iceberg. For some viruses/trojans, etc - the only way to get rid of them is to blow away the machine and start over. Heaven help you if your 'restore/rebuild' is on the same drive/system or if there is valuable data on said drive(s).

Of course, and I was not tying to imply that using one would guanrantee total saftey, its useful tool to have and to use, but its not fool proof.

Yep, there are so many ways to infect computers, thats why having backs up that are up to date are so important , if you value your data.

I totally agree with not putting a gig computer online. No worries about updating at all. I have a couple of tablets that I can go online with saving me having to go online with one of my laptops.
