Of COURSE Guitar Center has bouncers!... They hire biker gang members as bouncers... I just happen to be sitting outside of Guitar Center waiting for it to open, and snapped this pic of the bouncer as he arrived to work....

You may not like it, but the location means a lot. I play a few spots in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of DC. And I can drop an all ratchet, trap and hip hop set... and not see a fight start. That's not my goal, and I prefer to mix it up. But, the area you are in is a big part of why you talk about the problems you talk about.
Please tell me how the places you're talking about are being run? You also said you like to mix it up with what you play and not the same thing all night.

Again I contend that it's how a place is being run. The place can be in a nice area, but if not run properly it can turn into a zoo. Now what do you go to see in a zoo? Animals right? So if the place is being run like a zoo, what else do you expect to come in the place but people who act like animals.

Actually, you stated that it was about the music (specifically R&B & hip hop) and the people it attracts (specifically people with white tees & tims / hochiee mamas). We told you that it had nothing to do with the music and everything to do with the owners and managers.

We've also told you to look outside of your area to find better work.

Your favorite spot, the Private Place lounge is out of business. If they were so good at what they did, to include music, then why are they closed? A profitable place doesn't close up shop just for the heck of it.

I explained why it closed before. The place had major repairs that needed to be done and the barber shop next door wouldn't pay their rent on time.

Again it's about 2 things. It is about the music being played and the crowd it brings. Oldies will bring in mostly older people. Today's Hip Hop and R & B will mostly bring in a young crowd. Now the really big thing that keeps getting looked over is how the place is being run. The location has very little to do with it. There was the Private Place Lounge on one side of the street and J & A sports bar on the other side. Both in the same area. Both run differently. In the Private Place Lounge rarely was there an issue with someone wanting to start a fight. One big thing on a Friday or Saturday night they had a nice mixture coming in the place. Some young, some old and some in the middle.

Also any DJ playing in there had certain things they weren't allowed to do and if you insisted you would never play there again.

I remember one night I got a request for a song by 2 Chain. The owner had me quickly take that song off.

The place across the street I heard a female bust a guy upside his head with a beer bottle. The police always came in the parking lot when it was time for that place to close. They didn't bother with PPL. Only 2 times did I see the police come in the place. Once a young girl wanted to fight one of the regulars that came there and the other time people were inside the place after 2 AM which is a big no no. The place could've gotten a fine. They just got a warning because the police knew the place too well and didn't worry about there being issues where they had to come in and arrest someone.

But what crowd does YOUR music bring ... on older, non-drinking one that doesn't help the bar?

You sound like Jimmy. On a certain night an older crowd will work. It depends on the night, the DJ and the place. An older crowd will come out on a certain night like Thursday night and it's consistent. Besides feeling comfortable with being in the place. My friend does it and I did it on Sunday nights. Just that the problem with where I did it on Sunday nights the place was very unorganized. Lot of issues with this place. I came there on a Sunday looking to do what I do and I had to find out the place was closed. I was really pissed off. The owner could have called and told me what was going on. I had to find out from my friend that played there.

This makes my head hurt. You DJ there on Sundays, you arrived to find it closed and you were mad the owner didn't contact you but you had already been notified by your friend? So, why did you load up gear and travel to the club after your friend had already said they closed?

It's a Catch-22 .. the music YOU play and the crowds YOU like .. DON'T bring in enough revenue to these places to keep it open.

You missed what I said. I said it had to be on a certain night, with a DJ the people know and like. Also it has to do with the location of the place. My friend is doing it now on Thursday nights in 2 different places.

Another big thing is does the place have liquor. In other words does the place keep in stock what the people like to drink? That was a big problem with Ashanti's Tavern. At least one of the major reasons things wouldn't work in that place.

You missed it ... I meant in general there isn't much call for casual 80s house music listening (outside of a large club or a special 80s night), which means there isn't going to be enough people coming in to keep a place open. It has nothing to do with what day it is ... If a bar doesn't see business coming from you, they need to try others.

If you had the groupies you claim love your music, the bars/taverns would be all over you to perform.

Mix let’s make it simpler for you. The music you play doesn’t draw enough people into the bar who will spend money to make it profitable for the owner to hire you. That’s it that’s all that matters, it can be the coolest place in the world but when only 10 people show up because you’re there the owners gonna loose money

It's not personally about what I like. It's about the crowd coming in the place and what they want to hear.

Now one big factor is if the place is a cold place or not. Meaning is this place where it's mostly empty and you have to build things up. If it is a place like that it will take some time to get the place jumping. First people must know about the place, where it's at and what's happening in the place the night you the DJ are there..

When that happens and given a shot in the place, I like it when the owner/manager is willing to help with promoting the place and the night you are there. I hate when they expect you to do all the work and they do nothing. It's not my place. So why should I put in all the work promoting the place? The other thing is how much time will you be given to build things up. I say to be fair you should be given at least a month and not just a couple of weeks and they expect a packed house.

Exactly. Just as a place can be well-run....but located in a bad area.
So it's not ENTIRELY about how a business is run....
it's also about location.

Mix you can’t promote, the day of fliers working is long gone, you have focus hard n social media, Facebook, snapchat, Twitter, instagram, you need to learn to use these extremely well not have some partner or friend help you with them every time

You use all tools sir. Not everyone is into social media. I agree that's the best way to go but postcards will help too with people who don't do or like social media.

Personally I hate Facebook because people post too much dumb s*** on there. Yet I must use it. I don't like texting. I would rather you call me and talk to me but that's how a lot of people like to communicate. So I go with it. There's a club song by Weeks and Company called Go With The Flow. So that's what I learned to do.

There WAS a song by them 35 years ago .. the flow has changed several times in between.
