so you push play and hit automix but you arent a wedding DJ that pushes play? Which one are you and you make the two slide DJ thing to be so stellar. Sometimes you truly need to hop off that Farking pedestal man. Im surprised it hasnt been kicked from under you.
 
I like Canute, I really do... but the statement that not many DJ's can control 2 sliders at once is rubbish. Every club DJ I know can do that and more. It's really not hard. Throwing down 3-4 tracks ar once, all on beat, without using sync and just going by ear... THAT is hard! You have to use all 4 volume sliders, plus the crossfader, plus the pitch sliders of all 4 decks, plus any effects you throw in.

I have to say, when you use automix, you are not just a "push play" DJ, IMO you are not a "DJ" at all (not Canute, just generally). You are letting the computer play all your music, while you sit back and play on the mic or whatever. That makes you either an MC or a slacker, one of the two. I can definitely see using Automix for dinner music. I would too. Who wants to throw down some Kenny G for 2 hours? But to use it to actually DJ? Come on now!

And when you use Automix to make yourself "a better DJ" you are not BETTER at all! YOU have taken yourself out of the equation and turned your laptop into a DJ.

Some comments above in Red.
Using Automix on a playlist during a Dinner/Coctail Hour Hour is no different than putting a Mixtape/CD in and letting it play. When it is time for the real Entertainment and dancing I quit the Auto Mix option if I am using it.
I observe a lot of Djs on my time off and also when I rent them my gear. Those who do not use a Controller or utilize a Multiple Output Soundcard are using Automix. How else would they get the two separate channel decks to manually mix, when they go straight from Laptop to Powered Speakers or into one channel on a DJ Mixer?

Yes, automix makes it easy for cocktails and dinner hours, but you still gotta pick great songs for that period. And that takes experience which puts you into the equation.
 
Speaking of auto mix, I want to get to a point in which I do all the song programming per BPM in order before a gig, (songs that go well with eachother) and program a DMX moving head light show to go with the songs perfectly!

So I push play (automix) and let the song/light show go for an hour or two. I can sit back, throw in some effects here and there, hype up the guest a bit with he MCing, and that is it. Can of corn. It would make this mobile DJing thing soooooo easy. There is no thinking. If you had a perfect DMX moving head light show to go with the well picked songs, the guest would be like WOW!! Not..."is he really DJing live or not" It would be like a programmed light show for a music concert.

Of course, if the songs were not working for the crowd, you would have to switch it up a bit. Make changes when needed. Mabe have 2 or 3 sets, programed and ready to go.

Would this work?
 
It'll work, but some (not I) would not consider that DJing .. I think it's a sensible use of technology.

This is just a comment on your comment, not an attack on you.

What you are describing is a DJ Performance mixed with a Live Light Show. Its harder for one person to do it all, so, yes, using Automix then becomes and aid.

There is a big difference between a DJ who can manually Mix but chooses to use Automix as needed vs a DJ who does not know how to mix and thus relies on Automix most of the time. Automix mix has helped to made it very easy for anyone to call themselves a DJ.

This goes back to me not being able to mix top 40 at all. I'm not gonna lie, its hard as hell to mix top 40. I can mix house, but I can't mix top 40 at a wedding. Most DJ's can't. Can you guys here mix top 40 or how about 70's or 80's music? I'm curious how you pull it off.

Every wedding I have ever been too, the DJ does not mix two songs together for 30 or more seconds. It's just a fast fade in, fast fade out. Even a 15 second mix is pushing it. So why not add a DMX light show to go with the automix? It could work well. No?

I can match the BPM's of two top 40 songs, but to mix it so it sounds good and does not clash, is very very tricky.

I'm starting to think that the pro mobile DJ's have more skills than a pro club DJ. Club house music is very easy to mix. Wedding music, not so much.

Can anyone here post a mix of them mixing top 40 at an event? I would like to hear it. Mabe I could learn a thing or two about it?
 
I think mixing at a wedding is primarily beat matching and smooth transitioning.

In Blue you contradict yourself saying you dont push play and then you say your not like WEDDING DJs who push play. Putting it into Auto play anytime is started by pushing PLAY!! In fact if one were only to push play each time they switch from one track to another it would be more credible than pushing play on the automix feature. OF course you will turn it back to me thats how you role. Read what you wrote very carefully and in fact if you do use autoplay you are no different as you are performing regardless of what portion of the evening, dinner/ cocktail,or dancing. I admit to using the auto feature in certain situations but am adamant about playing most of my dinner and cocktail music on the fly.

I have mixed vinyl yrs gone by mostly and still on occasion. Not only can I mix top 40 with country and rock but also on 45 as I still have my collection and have mixed from those 45's on many occasions as well. House,Trance and Techno are very easy lining up the beats.

Jon, does the Dinner/Cocktail Hour entail the whole Wedding Entertainment. You are making yourself look foolish by nitpicking. Are you starving for a "Gotcha Moment"? Go take a leak, you just might get one, maybe, just maybe!

ITs not nitpicking since you made comment about lowlife Wedding DJs.I consider Cocktail and Dinner music equal to the whole evening of presentations by me. Tell me this then. Do you charge less to run auto mix than the party time when your in full operation mode? You are proving yourself the fool here pal.

You are introducing phrases such as "lowlife Wedding DJs" which did not come from me. This is a feeble attempt to solicit sympathy for your cause. You want people to feel offended by the words, your words, so they can side and agree with you against me. Thankfully, there are some intelligent folks here on this board that can see through your tactics and not jump on your bandwagon.

If you want to stand there at an event of which a Cocktail/Dinner Hour is part of the program manually adding and mixing songs, then that is your prerogative. I prefer to work smart. I can use Automix when necessary and not have to tire myself out manually playing song after song which is basically background music at that time. It is also very difficult to Manually mix when you are sitting at a table eating with the other Guests. Then again maybe you are not afforded such luxuries.
 
This one is easy for me. Do 3 things. Get over your fear of using the newer technology. Get a backup laptop and HD. Then go to KPODJ.com and get the Denon DN MC 6000 and case for that controller with the built in laptop stand. The controller is great and the one I have. It's built for the long run!
