Hello,

I was wondering if there is a market for djs at funerals. Do any of you offer this kind of thing? Thanks

I have done a couple of funerals or "celebrations of life". The last one was a big party, planed by the gentleman that was dying of cancer. He wanted everyone to party and have a great time in his honor.

Were there some somber moments?, Yes. But everyone had some drinks, some food, and danced.

On his request, before he passed, he wanted "Famous Final Scene" by Bob Seger played as the last song.

The OP did ask "at Funerals" not elsewhere. Are you saying the party you did was at the Funeral Home? Mine was! The deceased was also present! :djalien:

To me - a funeral is the procession from the funeral home .. to the grave site .. to the 'after party'.

A funeral in New Orleans is a party in the streets!

Being that the OP did not specify 'at the funeral home', he could have meant any part of the funeral.

FWIW - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funeral

A funeral is a ceremony for celebrating, respecting, sanctifying, or remembering the life of a person who has died. Funerary customs comprise the complex of beliefs and practices used by a culture to remember the dead, from interment itself, to various monuments, prayers, and rituals undertaken in their honor. Customs vary widely between cultures, and between religious affiliations within cultures.

I just attended a funeral (my cousin) last week and this same thought ran through my head as well. Outside of New Orleans, I doubt that you're going to sell it as a party but I do see the need for quality sound at the funeral home/church, maybe a discreet, small sound system like the Bose. I also see a real need for quality emcee work (the funeral directors suck at it), and grave-side sound (battery-powered, remote systems). At the last several funerals I've been to, they had a photo slideshow running as background filler. Those could be beefed up and improved, maybe even to do a "life story" presentation that could be presented during the service.

The other two obvious points are that this might well be a "you only do it once so go big" thing, much like we use for selling brides on a premium service. Then there's also the issue that the majority of these are morning-noon events, which are usually mid-week. Perhaps, if you could come up with some packages to pitch to the funeral directors, who knows?

To answer your question, NO, I see no feasible market in it at all. Anyway, I wouldn't want to be known as the funeral DJ.

But, I have done two. One for a stranger and the other time was for my own mother. There were so many people at her memorial service a PA was needed. She wanted us to have a big party celebrating her life so we did. I didn't necessarily DJ but we played some of her favorite tunes and I even danced, just like she made me promise.

Out of curiosity, what makes you say that? My day gig might become iffy in the next year and let me say that pap's schtick of pitching $200 quickie parties to day care centers is a strong contender to fill in the gaps, should the worst come to pass. At 1 hour in length, you could potentially stack 2-4 in a given weekday.

I was thinking they're out AT FUNERALS .. which was the topic of the day.

Don't be so sure....stranger demands have been made in people's wills.

I suppose .. I guess it would have worked coming out of Lawrence Welk's casket.
