Fear of running out of current top songs.

Did a Stag & Doe (Jack & Jane) (Pre-Wedding Party) last night. The first couple of songs played were current top 10 hits. I usually don't play "good reaction songs" that early in the evening fearing running out of current top songs to play later in the night when the party is rocking.

Well it turns out, it didn't hurt it at all because later in the evening the crowd wanted to hear basic classic rock.

What is your take on playing current top songs early in the evening? Comments?
 
How many hours would allow you to worry? Dig up last yrs hits most likely manyof them will work in between the mix. Unless its a night club and they want the hottest new hits then likely many will respond to more familiar older sets mix in a old school hit occasionally. I have stretched these type events 7 hours plus without a sweat. Funny thing is a 1.5 hour event or 7 + I always remember songs after that gee I didnt even play that song or that one.

There is enough top hits now on a local as well as nation level that I have no fear about running out of top songs, even if I stay with one genre.
 
I wouldnt fear that

because there is others that someone will ask for then what take out all your old songs just to have the latest

no thanks ...
 
The fact that the crowd wanted something else, speaks volumes as to why it doesn't concern me at all. The top 30 songs are played in constant rotation for months on end. They are the last things I want to play at a job.
 
No guys, you read me wrong. What I meant was how many DJ's save their best songs (current hits) for later on in the event and don't play them at the beginning?
 
It really depends on the crowd. If they are younger, start with BEP "I Gotta Feelin'" and go from there.

I wouldn't sweat it. Unless they are a hard core group, they'll like a wide variety of music.

I agree with Cam and Dave's points - most of this depends on the event and the audience. I also think that "best songs" and "current hits" are often not the same thing, but that's also up to the audience. People aren't concerned about "hits" as much as they are about "image". Playing "I Gotta Feeling" early sends a wedding audience the message that Dave is up on current music, because it's relatively current and rap-based, without being a turn-off to older guests.
 
Black Eyed Peas, as a group, are more acceptable to a wider audience than, let's say, Lil' Wayne... although it could be argued that both are rap acts.
 
Some people still use Lets Get Ready To Rumble to start their events, due to convenience. I hate being comfortable and love raising the bar finding the next best thing for the future.
 
I usually like to play the dependable songs when needed.
It's be nice to save them for the end, but if you don't get them dancing early in the evening, they won't be there to hear them at the end.
But I am not talking about purely new, hip, or current hits...
I usually appeal to the odler crowd in the beginning
and the younger crowd at the end....
so the new music is best saved for the end, when the old farts have gone home!

but...if the new music is the only music that gets them on the floor...
I will not wait until the end
