External HD recommendations?

Hey guys I am looking to get a new external hard drive, can you guys suggest a few good brands/models?

I will be using it to store my music and videos for use with Virtual Dj. I would like to be able to use it on both windows and mac osx platforms. But mainly windows.

If there is anything I can pick up at my local best buy/walmart/staples that would be even better. Thanks guys!:sqbiggrin:

I have 2 400gb Seagates that I'll be selling if you're interested. Both in good shape...just PM me. I just had to upgrade to 2 Cavalry 1tb hd's.

I agree western digital all the way.. My first external was a seagate and it sucked. I have 6 western's
 
I've built two 1TB external drives in the past week for a total cost of $150 each. While you can certainly find a 1TB external drive on the shelves at Best Buy for less than $150, I like knowing what's truly inside the case and knowing that I can easily take apart what I've put together in the event that things stop working as they should. For the extra $40 or so, it's tremendous peace-of-mind.

The parts used:

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA Hard Drive - $109.99

Macally G-S350SUA Aluminum 3.5" USB & 1394 & eSATA External Enclosure - $39.99

It takes a total of 4 minutes to put the drive in the case, and it runs flawlessly. Having USB, Firewire AND eSATA options is also a nice feature. Macally makes products primarily for Macs, but I only use Windows machines and haven't had any conflicts. The build quality of their enclosures is amazing.
 
I also use internal drives in external cases for the same reason Brendan does. I've been buying Bytecc cases. What I like about these cases is they have cooling fans, usb and firewire capable, and best of all they use standard Edison plugs. We all have plenty of those around.
 
What I noticed about some of the external drives is they have a run down feature. If you don't access the drive in a certain amount of time, the drive shuts down. I have a MyBook but have never used it during a show. It's my main drive and I mirror my others from it.

I've used mine at a show... and didn't notice any performance issues.

I've always been such a huge fan of Seagate, but over the last couple years their product reliability and quality control has declined drastically. I like the comfort of knowing that my data is safe and I just can't risk purchasing a Seagate until they reach the standards of reliability that they use to follow.
 
Wow! Thanks guy I woke up and checked this post and didn't think I'd already have so many great replies.

I think I am going to lean more towards Western Digital based on the advice given. My first external hd was a seagate and it crashed after a year so I'm not a big fan of thier products. ( i only used it for pictures and documents, nothing dj related)

Now its time to see who has the best price, thanks again guys.
 
I just put in a new NAS (Network Attached Storage) unit. It came with a single drive, but I replaced it with two 1 TB Seagates, in an X-RAID config.

I'm moving all my music, videos and photos onto it, so I can access them anywhere inside (or outside) my network. :)

It's a redundant mirror, so I actually only have 1 TB of space available, but it's expandable (you just replace one drive at a time while it's still running, and it will expand up as it goes). It also has 3 USB ports, and automatically backs itself up every day to a WD Passport. The ultra cool part about that, is if I decided to go on the road, I just grab the passport, plug into the lappy, and everything is available :)

I'll let you know how the Seagates hold up, as I haven't used that brand in awhile...
