Do you have a plan? How long do you plan on DJing? Till you are 50, 60? What are your thoughts or are you, like me, planning on DJing till you dies because I didn't plan...
 
Yes, I have a plan......But I've already missed that 50 thingie.....:tritongue: No particular age, but when it becomes a chore and I get no enjoyment out of it...then I'll pull the plug.

Rough outline of what we're doing.... Paid off all of our debt, except for the house, which we just refinanced for a 10 year note @ 3.125% and our goal is to pay it off in 7 years. We are cash flowing several big home improvement projects, the first is already done (new windows and doors), next project is we are having a metal roof installed on the house in the next month or so, after that we're looking at residing, guttering, etc. and that will probably come sometime in the late spring or early summer. That way the outside of the house will be ready to cruise into my retirement years...(if Coreen lets me live that long.) We're also factoring in that we'll need to do something with the HVAC system and will upgrade that also...in the very near future.

So, by the time I retire we will have no debts or payments of any kind.

Once we pull the plug on the music, I plan on keeping up with the photography and do that for a couple of more years if at all possible. I'll have a small retirement from my work, some Social Insecurity and we're stashing money away into our retirement accounts so we don't have to eat Max's dog food...

Coreen will probably work for at least 5-8 years after I retire, which will help a great deal.
 
Well, my wife already thinks I am too old to be a DJ. She can't figure out why a 30 something couple would want an old guy like me to DJ.

Since I am more hobbyist than a FT DJ, I will just fade away, even though it's better to burn out. Thanks, Mr. Young.

Hi Chuck! At the young age of 49 (haha) it's hard to believe that 25 years of DJing has rolled on by. I plan to keep going as long as I have a gig to go to! One thing that I have planned out was to downsize my gear and get smaller, more mobile and lighten the load so to speak. Powered speakers, laptops & PCDJ, led lighting, etc. has helped me reach that goal. I came from a musicians background (played drums professionally) and I love to reach people through music!
 
sounds like you are all on the same page as me,,,, but not to much planning for the future going on here....

I'm planning on moving back to South Florida in a couple weeks -- that's the future :)

At least if I have to continue working (which I prefer to do), I'm going to do it in a more comfortable weather zone. Ya never know, I may just get back into DJ'ing again on the side as a hobby, since I won't be spending all my time fixing things, and digging ditches...
 
humm guess I need to quit Im 61 but gigs booked all the way thru next June so Ill honor those and see how many I can book between now and then, music is my life I deal with it everyday, keeps me alive,, and young ,, wedding last night was jammed and dancing all nite,,

For us, when it stops being fun. At that point, we'll finish out any remaining contracts and hang the headphones up.

Hey! Maybe Chuck can start a retirement home for DJ's on the island. :yoapplause:
 
My daugther informed me(when she was about 5) that she was going to marry somebody rich so she could place me in "the finest nursing home available". So thats what I've got to look forward too.

Sadly at present if I had to exit the biz I'd be stuck at the 9-5 longer than I wanna be.... but, I am working towards not having too... first stop is a nice bank account of approximately 3 months salery..... in savings... then on to a 401K or similar stock options retirment fund.... I don't have any more gear to buy, my van is paid off and I no longer live paycheck to paycheck or even gig to gig.... which is nice and I'm about a 10th of the way to my bank goal now..... a few more gigs and I'll be there.
