EV ZXA1 overheating problems?

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
One thing to remember with passive systems is good ventilation for the amp so if it's rack mounted remove the rear cover as well to let air circulate properly :)
 
In the case of this EVZXA1, it simply appears to not be "ventable". Therefore, for this Old Dog, if it cannot be cooled, it cannot go out with me. External heat sink would have completely resolved that, but oh well.

Bill K, I think you need to sell them, and get something else. There are times where you cannot prevent direct speaker exposure to sunlight, and maintain aesthetics, as others suggest, and tenting may also not be possible(pool parties come to mind)

Sell them before the thermalling stops them from working.

I strongly suggest the QSCK10 or 12's. the 12's have a fan cooling, and they are unbelievably good. Wt 37 lbs. About as old as a grandchild;) They also, from what I know, do not have a thermalling issue.

Thanks Bill. Good info.
I will just have to find a way to shade them. It ticks me off because I specifically bought these to use for wedding ceremonies & shade is not always available.

Maybe someone should make umbrellas/or a shading type of device that attaches to the tops of speakers? If someone makes them (and they don't look silly) I would buy them!
 
Purely theoretical though but if there were no warranty or cost concerns.... you could remove the heat sink and get it plated in white or bright color to reflect the solar heat gain. You do not want to paint a black one white as the paint will act as an insulator, you woulds want conductive plating. They might have made it that way if they made white speakers for church installations.

Do not install enclosures with their rear panels exposed to direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will heat the amplifier module and reduce its ability to produce full output. Install sunshades if the application merits. Maximum ambient temperature for full performance to specification is 50° C (122° F). Do not install enclosures where exposed to rain or other water sources. The enclosure is not weatherproof. Outdoor installations must provide protection from the elements.

Bill, the biggest difference? The QSC12 HAS a fan mounted on the back. I do not know if the 8 or 10 does, but Mine own eyes have seen the k12 fan closeup.

I totally get what the manuals say about outdoors use, and yes, 100% correct. But we do outdoor events. So we use speakers. Getting one that at least has

A) a heat sink on the back to diffuse heat collected inside,

OR

B) has a fan to assist with cooling the interior

Simply makes sense given the inimitable fact that electricity + total enclosure + heat, and thermalling out in enclosed speakers.

Just sayin.

I have the K12 and yes, it does have a fan.
 
your not supposed to expose CD's nor laptops to direct sunlight either go figure. I bring my Easy up and or require shade when doing outdoor events RAIN OR SHINE. Who would expose their lifeblood to elements that have warnings against such.
