Dual Booting with Vista 32 and Vista 64

No stability problems at all. That's a just plain stupid excuse for being lazy. I'd say back in the days of XP 64-bit was a stability problem. Now-a-days even with all the trash people talk about Vista, Vista 64 is about as stable as you're gonna get outside of a *nix and nearly every Linux server I know runs 64 bit including ODJT's parent server.
 
Operating System - Windows XP or Vista is recommended, but stay clear of the 64 bit versions as Microsoft hasn't yet figured out how to get all of the 32 bit apps to work with it (and most DJ/KJ software is still 32 bit and probably will be for some time).

I don't think it is MS's problem. I don't know enough about software coding to speak on specifics but I'm currently running Windows 7 64-Bit RC. Not one app that I've put on the machine has failed to run. I installed all my normal apps. Firefox, Yahoo Messenger, WinSCP, Putty, Open Office, etc. None of them are 64 bit builds and all run perfectly and it's not even an official release yet. I'd expect something not to work due to that but it all works.

It's by that deduction that I've gotta think the problem is the coder not coding to standards. Rick, our trusted software dev here has said the same thing a few times, and it just makes sense.

The same thing happens with websites. Internet Explorer likes to play by it's own rules and doesn't follow W3 standards, to the point that many complicated sites detect IE and serve it a different sytlesheet (CSS) than it does any other browser. If I code to standards it will more than likely look good on all browsers except IE since IE has the market share I need to code for IE too, so we create a patch by swapping out the style.

Just because today 32-bit is the default standard much like IE is in the internet world doesn't mean tomorrow it's going to be and it would save yourself a lot of time and headaches in the future to just code to standards in the first place.

From all the topics I've read about dual booting, which you confirmed for me, it seems to be more of a hassle and cost than it's worth.

Rob, Are you running VDJ with your 64 bit vista machine??

I really need a new computer....And would soo love a 64 bit machine for
the ability to have a ton of Ram when it's primary use will be video.

nvidia GeForce 9300M GS 512mb
4gb ram
Vista 64 Home Edition

Out of the box there is a bunch of junk loaded but it comes with restore disks that allow for a cleaner install.

VMWare Server, haven't played around with many of their other products is pretty much the same as Virtual Box. :) Virtual Box seems to run virtalized Window's systems faster than Vmware Server where as VMWare Server seems to run *nix based VMs faster.

Just a thought here...

If yer running a 32 bit compiled program, on a 64 bit OS -- you are still limited in memory address space.

Just because the OS can use 847 biga-giga-tera-bytes -- does not mean your program can access that. There are also issues depending on whether the program is statically or dynamically linked with the Window's library's, how up-to-date those libraries are, etc... ;)


BTW, as Danno mentioned -- 64 bit, is backward compatible with 32 bit. The only programs that won't run, are those that use hacks around the Window's API. If they are audio related apps, they will also probably have random problems on 32 bit versions of Vista and Win 7 as well. Same with drivers (ASIO notably).
 
well I use VMWARE Workstation works well

but of late been using Sandboxie http://www.sandboxie.com

thats been doing well too

especially testing new software....
 
I'll tell ya it was as easy as 1, 2, 3 creating a dual boot system on my Vista 64 machine.

1. Shrink and then format the new partition

2. Install Windows 7

3. Reboot and select what Windows I want to run: Vista 64 or Windows 7

Done....

I think almost anyone on this board even Papa could have done it. :sqwink:

Ya well every other time I googled methods for creating a dual booting system they had all these long techno jargon filled proceedures that were as hard to follow as they were to read.... this last time I googled dual boot Vista and Windows 7 an vola... simple as 1, 2, 3.

Smarty pants! :sqwink:
