Does anybody just play music anymore?

Yup sure do....Believe it or not very few in my market use wireless so they way I figure it is it cost me $500 to give a service that most don't give I should be able to recoup my money. If the Wireless is standard why not uplighting or projector and screen?

Here's the other part my market sucks as far as price is concerned my average starting price last year was about $450 and I am one of the top 3 highest priced in the market so I start at a base of 4 hours with 3 lights and a full sound system and upsell anything else they may need. It works out good for me and good for the client they aren't buying a package to get one thing they need and 5 they don't

Besides just playing music I do a little beatmixing. :D Doing a ceremony is mostly just music isn't it? Of course every mobile DJ needs some kind of dance floor lighting, even if it isn't needed for some events. But I don't offer much in upsells, mostly because I don't have the money to invest, but also because I don't get many inquiries about them. I've only had one prospect ask about a gobo, and she ended up going with a multi-op that offers everything. I offer uplighting, but it isn't selling so far.

Video is something I've considered, and the initial investment might not be too much. But it could get to be a huge expense if done right. Photobooth? No thanks, too much up front expense.

I keep the equipment minimal and simply add good MC skills and good customer service.

How about this for a concept.......

if you'd like to focus on just playing music,then by all means do that. Other djs have found it very easy and profitable to add services that their clients are buying anyway.

The concept that "I do everything the perfect way. Everyone should do it like me", has always baffled me. We all have different businesses, different skill sets, different geographical constraints, time constraints, and outside interests. It makes perfect sense to me that some would just rather play music, while others would enjoy adding new services that their clients may want.


Personally, I like challenging myself. I like growing, evolving and changing as clients needs change

All of the services we offer are related to the dj business

Exactly, and well stated.

That is the concept that many are missing when I read a lot of the threads around the DJ forums, everyone has there own way to doing things, good, bad or indifferent. If you've been in the game a long time, that just says your doing it right, anyone on the outside looking in should just stick to what they are doing, I hear some of the critiques, and in many ways, some are valid on their face, but IMO, I've had annual repeat business with some clients for than 18 years......I'm pretty sure I'm doing something right.....regardless of what anyone else has to say about anything.

Always easy to critique from a keyboard, it would be a completely different story if some where on site to see for themselves.

Here is a little nugget for some to think about and has a similar parallel comparison:

In my early years I built my own knight rider replica.....got razzed for it, oh that's dumb, waste of money blah blah blah......When it was finished 3 years later.....the same idiots who saw it all had the same reaction......> Can I drive it?......Um no. Got me instant acceptance when I was looking to go to North Eastern University for my PhD.

So for them, seeing it in reality vs. from their birds nest viewpoint, entirely changed their opinion from one thing to the next just by actually seeing and being there......everyones mileage may vary...... :)

Thanks for your posts.

Just imagine how BORING this business would be if we ALL
used the same equipment
played the same songs
offered the same lights
said the same things
dressed the same
had the same haircut
drove the same vehicle
had the same website design
charged the same price
etc etc

There's a DJ and a DJ style for every client...
and I'm sure the clients are just as happy about it, as WE are!
