I try to use the right tools for the job at hand!

If I need to remove a 1/4" bolt I do not grab a 36" pipe wrench!

If I am hunting Elk I use a 338 mag, not a 22LR!

If I know I am doing a party for 50 people I don't load up 6 18" subs and 215 mains for that gig, if I am doing a party for 500 people I don't show up with a pair of RCF 300 actives!

It isn't about being lazy it is about being wise!

If you are single and have a "Hot Date" with a sexy chick, do you just take 1 condom or take a pack? :sqlaugh::sqlaugh::sqlaugh::sqlaugh: :sqlaugh: :sqlaugh: :sqlaugh:

I don't take any, I fully expect her to supply the condoms, I am buying dinner!

@PrecisionPower - A strained muscle would be a minor side effect. Sitting around eating a high carb and saturated fat diet then doing stressful work and having a heart attack would be the major issue. That's where the good diet and ongoing daily aerobic activity helps. Lifting heavy weight does nothing to help this. Get up off yer butt! :sqwink:

Scott

At 52, about the heaviest thing I lift now, is 12 ounces

I get tons of aerobic exercise everyday, but after a hernia from lifting a cast iron sink, and almost breaking my back on a new gas space heater -- I stick to the light stuff now :)

Hell, I do the stairs at least 90 times a day both ways -- because that's where my cig. making machine is, and I smoke 3 packs a day (granted, I don't inhale those) :D

Well I just loaded the gig rig all by myself as usual for this weekends events. 4 15" tops, 2 LS 800's, cd decks, stands, facade, 2 QSC amps for the tops, cable case, mics and my laptop.

I love the heavy stuff. It makes me cringe to see 2 mackie's on sticks and a laptop in the middle kind of a dj.

Thank You DJ JohnThe1.....You speak my language!! & Houston's too

If the gear you need happens to be heavy, then I'm all for it.

What I disagree with is bringing in heavy gear and/or extra gear simply because you are trying to make people think this is more difficult than it it. No one hires me because I bring a lot of gear. They hire me because they want a professional MC and they want great sounding music they can dance to. Not because they want to see lots of gear.

Let's be clear. THIS DOES NOT MEAN i suggest showing up with 2 cheap speakers and a laptop. If your set up looks cheap and sounds bad, it doesn't matter how much gear you have.

I suggest using top notch equipment and a facade. The presentation is very important.

Tell that to the old timer farmers....They work everyday 7 days a week.
Many into there 80's & 90's As soon as they "quit" working, And lay around
they don't last long...I know of 2 personally that died within 2 year's of not working.

Believe it or not, The human body is designed to work. 50 years ago the job market was much different..Manual labor was a part of life...And people didn't
have all of the health problems that are such issues today.

Am i wrong??

Yes, you are wrong. It seems you are suggesting that if more people starting lifting heavy equipment, the country would be healthier.

Keeping busy and doing things ARE important. Just laying around is good for no one. Physical activity that is healthy and good for the body is ALWAYS a good thing. No one is suggesting laying around.

Putting strain on the only back you have when it can easily be avoided has nothing to do with staying fit. To me, lifting a heavy rack mounted computer instead of a laptop because someone is looking to get exercise is not wise. If you prefer the rack mounted for security reasons and being able to fix it right there, that makes sense. But to do that to stay fit, it makes no sense at all to me. It also doesn't make sense that someone will think what you are doing is more dificult.

50 years ago, people smoked a lot more. They smoked in offices. 50 years ago, the life expectancy in the US was about 66 years. Today it's 77. The good old days weren't always as good as they seem.

While I agree that a lot of people today need more physical activity in their day, there are MUCH healthier ways to get that needed physical activity besides heavy lifting.

Hell! I just bought another amp Rack yesterday. It is going to house my 3 way system and will be heaver than the Slant amp rack. That makes for two amp racks and a DJ station. Coffin will be next! :sqlaugh:

You are correct Scott! I do happen to know though that the real good stuff is not light. I also know that when people hear real good sound and a good DJ together that they are likely to remember you.

And I happen to disagree with you. What you and I consider "the real good stuff" is obviously different. Which is OK. We have different personal preferences, probably do different types of events, and have different crowds in different geographical locations. Why would our equipment be the same?

But sacred cows make the best burgers. Just because something may have been true years ago doesn't make it true today. Bigger IS NOT always better. Especially with modern sophisticated electronics.

I've seen no evidence today to suggest that a larger computer will serve my clients any better than a laptop will.

For that matter, I've seen nothing to suggest that making anything I have bigger or bringing extra stuff that's not needed benefits my clients either.

I'm still looking for ways to make my set up even sleeker. Many clients have said that they love that my set up "didn't take over the room" like some set ups they've seen, which tells me my clients are interested in great sound and great entertainment, not super-sized equipment.

Yep! We have different markets and cater to different clients! Also different quantities of people.

Back to the original post.

OK, now that we have taken over the thread, lets give a concise answer to the OP.
My answer would be, it would depend on your situation, the look that you want, the way YOU care for and handle your gear in loading, unloading packing etc. The type of vehicle you use for transport.
A laptop is more portable, you can take it into the house and (leave the other gear outside) update your music etc. The Rack Mount can have more power depending on what is chosen. Hookups won't be needed every time at each gig.
There are pros and cons with both options.

Totally agree. I just disagreed with some of the "pros" mentioned for using a rack mount. That doesn't mean there aren't any pros.
