Define: Respect for DJs

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Owners manual doesn't explain how to set up your speakers on a grassy or sandy area does it?

It doesn't tell you at what volume level damage to the ear drum occurs does it?

Actually, many of them do.
Perhaps you should read them?

Why do caterers seek obtaining credentials from NACE? Why do coordinators seek credentials from ABC?

I've belonged to both, and the purpose is professional - neither organization has any significant name recognition among consumers.

Broad dj Certification = an ever increasing demand for your services at an ever increasing rate of compensation.

Where's the example?

Decry it as you will. It really doesn't matter to those interested in earning it.

I know that. I was simpy pointing out that it will also not matter to anyone after they earn it.

We have considered that. In fact we feel that is likely to be a part of the aforementioned reference letters. Just time in grade does not confer competence so we are seeking mix of evidences.

Yeah, I think it's sorta akin to putting together a resume...

I've reviewed many resumes in my career (and had mine reviewed by many). The #1 factor, usually came down to experience on the job, and not the education. But the mix of the whole package has to be weighed, and a good educational background certainly doesn't hurt.

Credentials for certification need to be verifiable, e.g. I can call the manager at XYZ venue, whom the prospect gave me a notarized letter from, stating that he/she had done 43 MC jobs at that venue.

It's still a very subjective certification, given it is entertainment -- but, someone who has accomplished xxx number of gigs within a recent time frame, and still gets hired regularly -- shows a certain level of accomplishment and success.

Whereas the education, only shows they could attend class...

The reasons for NACE members and ADJA members to seek such credentialing are the same.

Examples? If your truly the very best in your market, the demand for your services should be ten largest and your rates should match. It seems to track in other talent professions.

Only time will tell if it matters to anyone.

So who's the one to say whos certified or not ??

it can all be faked overtime - even to the point you call people up
to have them verify that you have done a show for them

it can all be faked ........

Agreed, anything can be faked, and I'm sure this will also.

However, as the Emperor (cue music) has already stated, ya gotta start somewhere. This might not be the best or final solution, but IMO it is the first step in the right direction.

cue the music?? Uncue the music, toss off the black hood references, fire up the good, the bad & the ugly..... Thanks Bob. We hope that DJs will atleast try.

This is not like asking someone applying for Network Administrator what current technical certifications they hold.

A DJ plan is entirely subjective and lacks any perceived need.

Every serious and independent minded DJ already knows it comes down to a bride asking herself:

"what do I trust more - the certificate of XYZ DJs or the referral of my trusted friends, family, co-workers, and other vendors I have a current relationship with?"

The ABC knows this fact all too well. It's membership is often void of the most prominent planners in any given market.

I understand what you are saying, and agree that at this time any kind of DJ certification would not be taken seriously by the public.

As long as it isn't going to cost me money, what harm is there in trying? Tweak it when it needs tweaking, and if it doesn't work after a couple of years, so be it. If it does work, future DJs might have it better because of what we did, which is good.

At least someone came up with an innovative idea, which is more than what I've contributed, so I guess I can't complain too much.

I think if you do the time and invest in yourself the certificate is atleast unique at this stage of the game. Using it as a tool to sell your services. Especially the dj/mc just starting out. Us old timers have built a rep so WOM is working well. Using certification to gain your own rep has no perceived need?

:triconfused:

well guess what it does cost you $$$
you have to be a member of the adja to even get in

lol no thanks

will never happen correctly

It is FREE to ADJA members such as Bob. So yes it is FREE to him.
You can't say what will or will not happen. Only time will tell & it is something that many feel is worth the effort & worth our trying.

It is interesting that your so negative about associations, yet your sig has the longest list of associations known to man. Is USODJA even still in existence? I thought that they folded 2 years ago.....

None, really.

Certfication of an entry level talent job where self-training generally produces better resuts than organized direction serves no purpose for the purchasers.

This is an area where the customers implicitly trust themselves more than any other independent credential you might offer them.

So self training how to hit a golf ball will produce better results than if I got a coach?

Yup.

I give.

You make all the sense in the world!

Sometimes, YES!!

I am a certified welder, never took a class.

I can play piano, by ear, never had a lesson, and yes I am very good.

Last year I tore down the entire back half of my house and rebuilt it, (My great Grandfather buitl the house in 1905), never had any classes, except for Bob Vila, Passed inspections on the first try.

So, sometimes, YES.

Hello DjDennis. I hope you checked your verification certificates. There are some grammatical errors that you should correct before anybody reads them.

As for the ADJA... I joined for a year and it didn't seem to help my business in one way or another. I was expecting some sort of newsletter or some sort of networking that would bring in NEW business. Being in the boonies and not having a chapter with regular meetings close by didn't help. The recession also hit at the same time. So, maybe I'll reconsider membership again if things improve in 2011. I would also want a heads up as to when meetings take place in the Phoenix Metro area.

Radiowizard,

You should have received mobile beat Magazine for free, additionally you should have received several dozen eNewsletters from ADJA with various offers for things to help you build your business. To find out more about the Phoenix local chapter meetings, There is one next week on Tues at 7pm. For details see phoenix.adja.org Scott Faver is presenting. It looks like a great meeting.

Exactly, If you don't have a natural talent for golf you can never excell beyond the limits of the instructions - meanning, the best you will ever be is a second rate imitator of your coach. People with natural inclination for something can grow without coaching or grow well beyond anyting the coach himself is capable of teaching - especially if there are no restrictions on the form of what must be done.

There is no such thing as a "certified golfer" - players must "qualify" based on their play before each new (client) tournament.

DJing is ART it does not require a coach because it is a game without rules.

The very notion of "certification" runs completely contrary to the very concept of what makes a particular DJ "outstanding."
