... so I get sent for an Audiology test by my GP and do all the sound booth computerised thingy...

Ta Da . Hearing loss and a prescription to have hearing aids fitted....

At first I was devastated (in my usual jocular way) until I see the pimped up hearing aids on offer - way cool and they're hardly visible. Royal Blue too.

Anyone else cop a bit of hearing loss or tinnitus ?

My ears are not in good shape either because I never took care of them. In my late teens and early 20's I had a way too loud car stereo and attended rock concerts basically every weekend, sometimes 2 in a weekend. That did the initial damage, then DJing and running sound intermittently for the last 20 years can't have helped. Now when I hear loud noises for I experience pain and crackling sounds in my ears. I have been searching for ear plugs that cut all frequencies evenly but have yet to find anything that I could use at a gig. In addition to pain & crackling, I have a very hard time hearing a conversation in a loud room which my wife passes off as selective hearing. :trirolleyes:
 
Scott I was using earplugs before I got the diagnosis

I will still use them when I go to big gigs. The one's I use are special acoustic ones and take out the harmful "top end" which is where I have most hearing loss.

They are conical and on a chord.

I Compered a big local rock show recently and wore them when not using the mic myself.

They did take the edge off the gig which was heavy metal and blues...

I think I got the plugs from Amazon.
 
Those DJs most prone to it are the ones who like to take up as small a footprint as possible and wear their speakers like headphones! :yowigglyeyes2::yowigglyeyes::yo1eye:

Seriously speaking I would rather deal with Live Sound type speakers close to me than DJ type speakers close to me. If you have the power and a system tailored with the ability to adjust frequencies, then the sound can be much more bearable. When I hear the shrill sound of regular DJ speakers blaring it does hurt my ears.
 
I too have ringing in the ears, Dr. told me it was tinnitus and they could operate but here come the good part after they operate i would lose 20 up to 40% of my hearing and it would only detune the high ring to a low ring, i said no thanks when the rings keeps me up at night thats when they can operate
 
Yep, the hazzard of not wearing ear mufflers of some type. Guilty, here, too. Went to specialist for audio check a couple months ago. Loss of hearing in the 2000 rang. Wife suggested I check it out. When in car and road noise apparent I couldn't hear but parts of what she was saying. Couldn't hear the car's "turn signal" either. After several times of telling me the "turn signal" was still on, I decided it was time to check. I don't have "ringing" in the ears like those of you reported. I believe it comes and goes with me, the "ringing" in the ears. Audiologist wanted to know if I had considered hearing aid? Nope! Not until after I stop DJ work. :)

IF anyone has been in this business long enough I'm sure they must have some hearing loss nobody thinks before they only realize after gee i wish i wore ear protection

I take a sleeping pill that knocks me out at night.
 
I'm going to be doing a few high profile DJ/MC jobs this year and will practice with hearing aids on the build up to the jobs.

I'm thinking that they will help me realise how loud the music is and adjust the volume accordingly

The hidden sound loss you mention in your turn signals comment is right and weird when you realise it.
 
I get my hearing aids fitted on the 9th and will let you know my experiences with differing situations.

I have stopped jocking for a living and do occasional civic events and MC upscale weddings - only when it suits me....

I mentioned a couple of years ago that I am the plymouth Town Crier which is a laugh (I do not take it seriously) I found out from my Audiologist that my scripted speeches could be affected by hearing loss in that I would speak to fast, stumble on sentences and such...

That was a statement that rung (pardon the pun) true. I have been recording my friends poetry and sometimes make a balls up of it.
