I never said the image looked bad, in fact I said it looked fine. It also looks to easy and somewhat makeshift.
What I'm actually looking at is an oxymoron: the expansion of one's "professional" offerings through the use of a common school/office/home fixture and a skill sets that barely exceed a typical high school freshman. This prolific habit of DJs in some small degree is what shapes the public image of most DJs - that they are merely entry level providers of skills and things you already have. It's the lighting equivalent of DJing with an iPod.

I suppose when Walmart and Sam's Club are your primary equipment suppliers ...then you would be correct.
More accurately, the equivalent of DJing with turntables or a laptop. But I'm sure you love that vinyl, right?
What is wrong with Vinyl? At least if everyone was still using Vinyl there won't be all that pirated music and thus all the Wannabees. I agree with the message that Bob is trying to convey. As we utilize more and more consumer products, other see that and feel that they can do it themselves, so they copy. I am not saying that one should not use a projector, what I am saying is that there are Pro Grade and Consumer Grade versions. DJs were the one starting to use iPods and thus many followed. We have mixed Hobby Gear with Pro gear and now the line is blurred. Customers are not that much caring as long as they get what they want. It is up to the Professionals to offer the best not just the make do. Customers then come to expect the best. Those who want to follow and copy will then have to pony up the cash. How can one be different if they are mixed in a pack of mediocre offerings?
You think my package is mediocre? I change with the times and use the tool that gets the job done and I don't worry about copycats because I'm always searching for how to do it bigger and better. My clients seem to be agreeing with me.
I never said that your package or show is Mediocre Mr. Ryan. As you well know, there are many who deliver just the bare minimum. The problem with that is, it can degrade the final product. You do well by trying to stay on top of the rest and thats all good!

Forget about it Rick, guys like Houston & Bob live in their own little fantasy world.....and will always put down those that choose not to drink the kool-aid. I really laugh at Texass when he promotes using Dollar General appliances and then wants to chime in about not using pro gear. Look at many of his posts and stances and you'll see he back-peddles alot when his stories don't jive.
It's not what I use to project the monogram that matters .... it's the unique & custom monograms that I can create is what sells. So what if someone knows that they can use a projector to project it; they have no clue on how it's created and the tweaks it takes to make it look great. And, my target clients don't want to DIY, they want to be pampered.

Just for clarification and to help me further understand. When someone comes up and asks you to play (for example) Gangnam Style, do you pull out a vinyl record to play it?
I am not putting down anyone. Those are your words. I was commenting on the way things are going in the industry. The stuff that I buy at the Dollar Store is the SAME items that are sold elsewhere for more. Model and Manufacturer is the same or comparable. Take for instance, these are sold for $4.25 plus shipping/tax. I did not balk to spend $2K on a Laptop even though there are many on here that would never budget for that much. So I don't know what you are talking about. That question has no relevance. Is it available in Vinyl? If not, then one has no choice but to play it in the available format, right?
I am fortunate to get releases directly from some lablels, that are not for sale to the public in certain versions (Instrumental, Acapella, Dirty & Clean and Special Mixes). It is stuff like that that sets me apart from some of the rest. If not, I make my own mixes and blends on the fly.
