Ok I have a very novice DMX question. This is my first attempt at DMX and am having trouble getting it set up. Does anyone have any input in this that may help... I am not quit sure how to set the COLORstrip to read the OBEY3. Any help for... I know I will get some smart arse responses, but really want help.
 
Not sure you can .. the Obey 3 works with 3-channel devices (RGB), the COLORstrip is a 4-channel device. You may need to move up to an Obey10/40.
 
You can use the Obey 3, you just can't use the preset colors on it.
Set the color strip to channel 1. Then on the Obey 3 select "Manual RGB" and slowly move the Red slider up to go through the various colors and functions.
 
Yes, Mike is correct in that you should be able to access the 1st 3 channels of the colorstrip, which means you can't use RGB colors (which uses channels 2,3 and 4, but you can probably use the pre-programmed options (see pg 10 of the manual: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/products/manuals/COLORstrip_UM_Rev4_WO.pdf ). There does not appear to be a direct fade, but there is a fade speed in the "color mode" .. whatever that does.
 
Ok I have the Obey 10 and and been playing with it. Man I thought learning even simple DMX would give me a head ache.Question I have is I want to be able to dim the colorstrip, so it is not so bright. I see it has fade, but figured out that is for between colors, not fade intensity. Any help with this, also any pointers on using this Obey 10?
 
It does not look like that specific fixture has an overall intensity control, so the only way I can see to do it would be to put it into RGB mode (channel 1 with a value of 210-219 .. about 80% up) and then use channels 2-4 to set the color intensity.
 
Exactly what Steve said, that'll work fine.

Some people tape a diffusor or windowtint to the front of the Colorstrip to dim it down. Or just point it at the ceiling/floor/walls and not in people's faces, that works too.

You could have bought this instead, ADJ Profile Panel RGB. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...ampaign=none&gclid=CJ26qoKywrECFQPznAodQ3sAMQ I used two at a Fashion Show last week and they worked well. In the Photo it shows 4 different sections but you can program it to show 1, 2 or 4 or more Colors. View attachment 26943

kind of funny you show him after the fact something he could have or should have bought. How does that help him now?

If you bought something for use that did not work this time and someone recommended something that could work, what would you do next time the need is there?
Have you forgotten that this is why we share information. Some may learn by trial and error!

I know I am coming in on this a bit late, but you can dim the individual channels of the color strip. Say you want a nice soft blue for first dance or something, just tkae all channels down and only raise channel 4 a bit and the blue will come on and you can brighten or darken it as you want. Then save this as a program so youc an recall it later. It will remember the dimmnes.

I plan on buying an Obey10.

Since you have an Obey10...
I've heard that in order to rack mount it into a 2 rackspace area, I'll need a 90 degree (right angle) DMX output cable from the Obey10? Is this true?
Do I need a male or is it a female DMX angled cable?

Outputs from a Unit usually require Female Cables and Inputs usually require Male Cables.

Depends where it is in the rack. If it's the top most, you may be able to keep a straight lead. If it's in the middle, you may need a right angle.

I found one. Thanks!
Now I just need to figure out how to program the DMX in the controller.
